Frawley Paces Offensive Outburst as Retrievers Overwhelm High Point, 19-13

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J) scored six goals for the third time in his career and led the Retrievers to a 19-13 win over High Point in cool, windy conditions at UMBC Stadium this afternoon.

UMBC won for the fourth consecutive time and improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2001.

High Point fell to 2-6 as UMBC joined the list of teams like Maryland, Duke, Virginia and Cornell to defeat the Panthers.

Frawley added an assist and became the 35th player in school history to surpass the 100-point plateau. He now has 85 goals and 17 assists for 102 points.

UMBC never trailed, but the teams traded the game's first four goal late into the first quarter. Retriever sophomore midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) started the game's critical run with an unassisted score with 2:32 to play in the period. Sophomore linemate Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added a score just 32 seconds later and Frawley finished a Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) feed 55 seconds hence to give the hosts a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.

The Retrievers would double that scoring run to 6-0 on another McIntyre-to-Frawley finish and a pair of scores by freshman midfielder Dane Hall (Harwood, Md./St. John's College). After HPU's Mitchell Snyder and Frawley exchanged scores, the Panthers tallied three times in a span of 91 seconds late in the second quarter to trim their halftime deficit to 9-6.

But UMBC responded with a 5-1 surge over a span of 10:30 to open the third quarter and take a 14-7 lead. On two occasions, the Panthers sliced the deficit to four goals, the final time on a Tyler Hendrycks' goal to close to within 15-11 with 11:17 remaining.

But Hall completed his first career hat trick and Frawley tallied his 11th and 12th scores of the season to put the Retrievers comfortable ahead, 18-11, with 5:01 remaining.

Galloway (3g, 1a) and Hall recorded three-goal games, while sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (2g, 1a), junior midfielder Steven Zichelli  (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman midfielder Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) all scored twice.

Hendrycks and Dalton Sulver each scored three goals for the Panthers.

UMBC outshot HPU, 47-30 and controlled 19-of-34 face-offs. The Retrievers took advantage of seven High Point penalties as they scored 3-of-6 man-up chances. Junior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made nine saves to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The 19 goals scored matches the most the Retrievers have scored under fourth-year head coach Ryan Moran. UMBC defeated Lafayette, 19-8, in 2019.

The win also evens the all-time series at 2-2 and avenged a 22-13 HPU triumph in North Carolina a season ago.

The Retrievers open defense of their 2019 America East title when they travel to Burlington, Vt. to take on the Vermont Catamounts. The rematch of the 2019 title game gets started at Virtue Field at 3:00 p.m.
