Box Score BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's basketball team fell in its America East home opener on Wednesday night to the Binghamton Bearcats, 61-43.
The Retrievers were led by junior Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) who put up 11 points and nine rebounds, just one shy of picking up her fourth double-double of the season; Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) chipped in nine points, followed by Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) with eight; Oliver now moves into 18th all-time in program history with 1,045 points.
Binghamton opened the first quarter to a 10-2 lead before Oliver started an 8-0 run that would tie the game up at 10-all. Summers converted a pair of free throws and Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) hit the layup that would ultimately tie the game up with 3:52 on the clock. Binghamton outscored UMBC 10-2 at the end of the period to take a 20-12 lead into the second period.
The Bearcats continued their run into the second quarter as they took a 28-12 lead halfway through the period. Swann and O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) broke up the scoring run to cut into the Bearcats lead, 28-16, with 4:47 to play. The teams trade baskets until the end of the period where the Bearcats took a 36-20 lead into halftime.
Swann opened the third quarter with three straight points while Oliver and Costa added two more to help cut Binghamton's lead to 11, 41-30, with 3:37 on the clock. The Bearcats ended the period on 7-0 run, extending their lead back to 48-30 as the teams went into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Binghamton extended its lead to as much as 27, 60-33, before UMBC went on a 10-1 run at the end of the period, with eight of those points coming from Summers.
The Retrievers held America East's leading scoring Kai Moon (21.1 ppg) to just 14 points in the contest, her third-lowest on the season. Overall, the Bearcats slightly edged the Retrievers in field goal percentage, 33.8 percent to 29.6 percent.
UMBC will return to the court on Saturday, January 11 when they take on the Vermont Catamounts. Tipoff from Patrick Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
