Retrievers Split Double Header with UAlbany on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Albany, N.Y.—UMBC baseball picked up an impressive 7-1 win in game one of the double header, before falling in the nightcap, 4-3. The Retrievers were down as much as 4-0 in game two before a furious seventh inning rally fell just short.

The Retrievers move to 16-15, 3-8 AE on the year while the Great Danes move to 13-16, 5-6 AE.

Game One:

The Retrievers got out in front early with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) continuing his strong junior campaign with a solo home run in the fourth to give UMBC the early lead.

However, the Great Danes would respond, capitalizing on a Retriever error to tie the game on a Travis Collins single in the sixth.

UMBC would take the lead and push in front for good using a big eighth inning charge. Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) would rip a one out single up the middle and be brought home just pitches later by a Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) triple. Pinkston would come around to score after Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) reached on an error. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drove him in with a double, with Christian Torres scoring on a passed ball to make it 5-1.

Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) added the exclamation mark, blasting a two-run home run to make the lead 7-1.

Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) and Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished off the Great Danes in the eighth and ninth, as Schoch fanned five batters in 2.1 innings in the 7-1 win.

Wright recorded a pair of hits in the contest with seven different Retrievers earning a hit.

Game Two:

The Great Danes jumped out early putting up three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. They would add another in the fourth, as the Retrievers were held to just one hit through the first six innings.

UMBC would respond in the seventh, putting up three runs. Wright got it going with a double to right that scored O'Saben. Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) would pinch run and score off a passed ball that also scored Wright to make it 4-3.

However, the comeback would fall just short, as the Great Danes held on for a 4-3 win in game two.

UAlbany and UMBC conclude the series tomorrow with a noon first pitch.
