Casey Drive in Five; UMBC Baseball Hold Off George Washington in Wild 14-12 Victory

Box Score

Arlington, Va.-- UMBC baseball had to fend off rallies from the Colonials on Tuesday afternoon in a crazy 14-12 victory to start off their five-game road swing. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) was named America East Rookie of the Week earlier in the day, and continued his strong run of play driving in five runs in the win.

UMBC wins their second straight game to move to 7-11 while George Washington falls to 14-10.

The Retrievers never trailed in the contest, getting out to a fast 4-0 start in the first. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drew a two-out walk, and would score on a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) double to right to make it 1-0 early. After a Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) walk, Casey came up and drilled a three-run home run to right to give UMBC a 4-0 lead.

Goodwin would single in Wright the very next inning to make it 5-0 before the Colonials responded. GW put up two in the second and two in the third to cut the Retriever lead to just one.

The Retrievers would extend their lead with a three spot in the fourth off a pair of RBI singles by Wright and Casey to make it 8-4. After a two-run home run by the Colonials, UMBC once again put up a three spot to extend the advantage to 11-6.

GW would not go away, cutting it to 11-9 into the seventh, when Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) belted his first home run of the year reestablishing a three run lead.

However, the Colonials would claw all the way back to tie it in their half of the seventh. Pinkston once again came through in the clutch, driving in Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) to give UMBC a 14-12 lead.

Andy Rozylowicz (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) pitched the final 2.2 innings, picking up his second win of the year.

Casey led the Retrievers with five RBI with Pinkston and Torres each collecting four hits on the afternoon. Casey's five RBI game is the most by a Retriever since Collin Stack drove in eight back in 2017.

UMBC continues their five-game road trip at Coppin State on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
