Retriever Bats Come Alive in 9-3 Win Against George Mason on Wednesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball collected 16 hits in a 9-3 win against George Mason on Wednesday afternoon. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) each had three hits with Pinkston driving in two runs in the win.

UMBC improves to 5-9 on the year while the Patriots fall to 10-9.

The Retrievers got the scoring started with a four spot in the second inning. Torres led off the inning with a single and would score just pitches later off a Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) double to right center. Goodwin would come around to score off a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) ground out. Pinkston would drive in two off a double to right plating Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to make it 4-0.

Casey added to the lead in the third with a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Goodwin to make it 6-0.

That would be all starter Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) would need, as he went five strong innings giving up just three runs with four strikeouts to earn his first career win.

George Mason would get three runs over the fourth and fifth innings off a pair of home runs, but the Retrievers had the answer in the fifth thanks to a Wentzlaff RBI single.

UMBC would tack on two more in the sixth to add insurance as they took a 9-3 decision against the Patriots on Wednesday.

Eight different Retrievers recorded hits in the contest with Pinkston and Torres each collecting three. Casey had a pair with three RBI.

The Retrievers will conclude their home stand against UMass Lowell this weekend. The Retrievers and River Hawks will play two on Saturday starting at noon with the finale on Sunday also at noon at Alumni Field.
