Comeback Effort Falls Just Short for UMBC Baseball in 8-5 Loss to Stony Brook

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC baseball rallied to within three runs after being down by as many as seven, but could not complete the comeback in an 8-5 loss to Stony Brook on Sunday. UMBC had two on in the ninth but left them stranded in the loss.

UMBC falls to 4-9, 0-3 AE on the year, while the Seawolves improve to 7-7, 3-0 AE.

The Retrievers fell behind in the first inning, as the Seawolves scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. UMBC would respond the next half inning, as Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) tripled home Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.), who got on with a walk earlier in the inning.

However, Stony Brook would put up three runs in the third to take a commanding 4-1 lead. UMBC had chances to cut into the deficit, getting runners in scoring position but they would strand four runners on base over a three inning stretch.

Stony Brook would add a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-1 and get another two in the seventh to make it 8-1.

UMBC would respond in the eighth. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) got on board with a walk and would get to third just batters later. The Retrievers would load the bases with two out. Casey would draw a four pitch walk to score Wright making it 8-2. Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) came up and drilled a two-RBI single to left to score Torres and Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) to make it 8-4. Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) followed suit with a single to left scoring Casey to make it 8-5.

The Retrievers would threaten in the ninth, getting a pair of singles from Wright and Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.), but a ground out ends the threat, as Stony Brook held on for an 8-5 win on Sunday.

Wright, Torres and Wentzlaff each had two hits with Casey and Wentzlaff driving in two runs each.

UMBC returns to Alumni Field for a four-game home stand starting on Wednesday, March 20 against George Mason. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
