UMBC Baseball Drops #AEBASE Season Opening Double Header to Stony Brook on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC baseball dropped both games of their America East opening series with Stony Brook by scores of 4-3 and 9-3 on Saturday afternoon. UMBC held a lead in both games, but could not hold on. The Retrievers fall to 4-8, 0-2 AE on the year.

Game One:

The Seawolves got on the board early, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the first inning. UMBC responded with a solo home run from Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) in the top of the third for his first collegiate home run.

UMBC would tie it up with a run in the fifth. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) laced a one out single and advanced on a Casey ground out. Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) would bring Beeman home with a single to center field to make it 2-2. The Seawolves would retake the lead in the bottom of the inning before UMBC responded in the sixth.

After Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) reached on a single and advanced on a stolen base, he would score just two batters later on a Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) single.

However, Stony Brook would retake the lead in the seventh and hold off the Retrievers to take game one 4-3.

Casey led the Retrievers at the plate with two hits including the solo home run.

Game Two:

The Retrievers jumped out in front thanks to a two-run home run from AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) to give the Retrievers the early lead.

However, the Seawolves would take control from there, putting up four runs in their half of the inning to take the lead for good. Stony Brook would add three more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead before the Retrievers scored again.

Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) would cut into the deficit with an RBI double to score Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.), but the Seawolves would add two more to win 9-3.

Six different Retrievers recorded hits in the contest, led by Wright and Torres driving in runs.

The series finale will begin at noon tomorrow, March 17 from Joe Nathan Field.
