Torres, Trabacchi Shine in 12-0 Shutout Win Against UNC Asheville

Marion, N.C.-- UMBC baseball got a strong start from Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y.) and a big day at the plate from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) in their convincing 12-0 win against the Bulldogs on Sunday morning. Torres finished just a double shy of the cycle with Trabacchi tossing six shutout innings with four strikeouts. UMBC belted 17 hits with eight extra base hits and two home runs in the win.

The Retrievers improve to 2-1 on the year while the Bulldogs fall to 1-5.

UMBC got things started early, putting up four runs in the first. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) ripped a double and would score just pitches later when AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) doubled him home. Torres followed up with an RBI triple and then scored when Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) blasted a home run over the left field wall to make it 4-0.

The very next inning, the Retrievers put up a five spot to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) brought in Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) on a bunt single after Machado led off the inning with single. Pinkston brought home Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) with his second double of the game to make it 6-0. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) brought in O'Saben with a sacrifice fly the very next at bat, setting up Torres. The junior blasted a two-run home run to give UMBC a 9-0 lead.

From there, Nick Trabacchi would shut down the Bulldogs, holding them to just four hits in six innings.

The Retrievers would tack on two more runs in the eight and one in the ninth to take Sunday's rubber match 12-0.

Torres led the Retrievers going 3-5 from the plate with three runs scored and three RBI  just a double shy of the cycle. Wentzlaff also had three hits and two RBI. as seven different Retrievers recorded RBI on the day.

Trabacchi dazzled in his first start this year, twirling six shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

UMBC will have the week off before heading to Miami next weekend. The three-game set with the Hurricanes will start on Friday, March 1  at 7 p.m. and will air on ACC Network Extra.
