Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. -- Senior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) finished with a career-high 27 points for the UMBC women's basketball team, but Mount St. Mary's pulled away late in the fourth quarter to take the game 71-61 on Wednesday evening at Knott Arena. The game moved both team's records to 2-3.
The Mount would jump out to their largest lead of the game in the beginning of the third quarter, going up 38-30. The Retrievers wouldn't go down easy though, chipping at the lead little by little. Freshman Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) and senior Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) aided the small comeback, scoring all the team's points in their quarter-ending 7-2 run to put the Retrievers down two, 52-20, going into the final quarter. The defense stepped up as well, holding the Mountaineers to 1-8 shooting from deep for the period.
The fourth quarter was a close one, as Swann lead the charge shooting 3-4 from the field to keep the game within three points at all times. This included tying the game three times and a UMBC lead change, but UMBC couldn't overcome 29 turnovers, as they turned the ball over multiple times late down the stretch. This would allow The Mount to pull away with the help of a 9-2 game-ending run to finish with a score of 71-61.
After letting The Mount get out to an 8-2 lead to begin the game, the Retrievers would shoot a blistering 88.9 percent from the field to end the quarter on a 17-5 run. The Retrievers only missed one shot in the whole quarter, with Oliver scoring eight points during the run including three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Eryn Fisher (Perth, Australia) ended the run with a layup to put the Black and Gold up six, 19-13, going into the second quarter.
The second quarter started off the opposite, as The Mount opened up the quarter on a 13-0 run to take the lead, until Oliver scored her first of three and ones making the score 26-22. The teams would trade buckets for the second half of the quarter, going into halftime with Mount St. Mary's holding onto a 34-30 lead.
Oliver finished the night shooting 9-15 from the field (4-7 3FG), and added two steals, two assists, and four rebounds, while Swann pitched in a career-high 16 points on the night.
