Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball suffered a 58-44 defeat to Vermont on Wednesday morning. Sophomore forward Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) led the Retrievers with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth career double-double and third this year.

The Retrievers fall to 7-12, 0-6 AE on the year while the Catamounts improve to 8-11, 4-3 AE.

Vermont got out to an early lead, forcing a Retriever timeout up 9-3 just three minutes in. That lead would extend to 15-3 before the Retrievers ended the first with five straight points on a Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) layup and free throws from Summers and Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) to trail 15-8 after one.

UMBC cut the deficit to just three with O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) and Costa hitting layups to open the second. After the Retrievers got the deficit to just two later in the half, Vermont put together a 6-0 run to take an eight point advantage, extending that to a 12 point lead, 30-18 at the break.

Summers led the Retrievers with nine points at the break, with UMBC scoring 10 of their 18 points in the paint.

Both teams came out of the locker rooms exchanging baskets, but a pair of turnovers on back-to-back possessions allowed the Catamounts to take a 13 point lead with two minutes left in the third. UMBC would trim the lead to single digits with Oliver hitting a layup just before the end of the quarter, trailing 41-32.

In the fourth, Vermont took their largest lead after Candice Wright hit a tough and one layup to put the Catamounts up 14. The Retrievers would try to cut into the lead, but Vermont held on for a 58-44 win on Wednesday.

Summers led the Retrievers with 15 points adding 10 rebounds for her sixth career double-double. Oliver was the only other Retriever in double figures with 14 points.

Josie Larkins led the Catamounts with a career high 23 points.

UMBC remains at home to take on New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan. 26 at noon. The game will also be the team's Alumni Day. The game can be seen on ESPN3 with Troy Green, Raven Harris and Pandora Wilson on the call.
