Box Score Baltimore, Md – The UMBC baseball team won their fifth straight game, and sixth out of their last seven, as the Retrievers edged Delaware, 5-4, (15-12) on Wednesday night at Alumni Field. A big five-run fourth inning gave the Retrievers (8-11) the lead and they never looked back.
The Blue Hens struck first, putting three unearned runs on the board in the third inning. After two men reached to start the inning, a two-base throwing error by Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) allowed one run to score while setting up runners at second and third. A sac bunt was laid down by Kevin Mohollen, but he was able to reach base safely and another run was added. A grounder by the very next batter allowed the third run to score. Delaware would add another run in the top of the fourth off another RBI groundout to make it 4-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning.
UMBC would answer with five runs in their half of the fourth, lead off by back to back singles from Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va/Oakton). After a Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md/Boonsboro) walk, A.J. Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), who returned after missing six games, lined a single into left center to score the first run for the Retrievers. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) would walk, forcing in a run and Torres would redeem his prior error, by hitting a two-run double to the wall in center field to tie the game at four. The double would extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Zach Bright (Fairfax Station, Va/WT Woodson) would groundout to second base to score Stack to give the hosts the lead for good at 5-4.
Torres is hitting .414 (12-29) with three doubles, seven RBI, and has only struck out once during his eight-game hitting streak.
Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) picked up his second win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings, while striking five batters out and giving up only one earned run. The bullpen trio of Patrick Phillips (Richmond, Va/Old Dominion), Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md/Bethune-Cookman), and Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md/Good Counsel) would pitch a combined 3.1 innings of relief, only allowing two hits and striking out three, while walking none. Callahan picked up the save, his second of the season.
The Retrievers will head to Vestal, New York to face Binghamton in a America East Conference matchup over the weekend. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8th and a single game on Sunday, April 9th with first pitch for both games scheduled at noon.
