Arlington, Texas – The 49th-ranked UT-Arlington Mavericks defeated UMBC, 4-0, in an abbreviated match held at the UTA Tennis Center on March 17.
The Retrievers departed from their spring break trip to Texas an evening ahead of schedule, so the entire team could attend funeral services for volunteer assistant coach and UMBC alum Sol Schwartz, '92.
Senior Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) and sophomore Charlotte Tonjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) were leading at No. 3 doubles, 5-2, when the Mavs clinched the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions.
In singles, freshman Maria Siopacha (Limassol, Cyprus) was leading at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-4, when her match was halted. UT-Arlington captured the Nos. 2,3,4 singles matches in straight sets to prevail.
The Retrievers return to Baltimore and open a season-ending, seven-match homestand versus rival Stony Brook on March 25 (1:00 p.m.).
