Box Score Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball fell 67-59 to New Hampshire on senior day on Sunday. Junior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) poured in game high 17 points as the Retrievers finish the regular season at 17-12, 8-8 AE on the year.
UMBC started the game on fire, getting back-to-back buckets by Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross), followed by a Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) trifecta to push UMBC ahead 7-2 early. The Wildcats would cut into the deficit, getting it to within three, but a pair of baskets by McCarley pushed the Retrievers in front 12-5. They would close the quarter with a pair of McCarley freebies to lead 16-9.
McNaughton opened the second stanza with a triple, as part of a 7-0 run by the Retrievers. UNH tried to cut into the UMBC lead, but once again McCarley responded with a steal and run out.
It was all Wildcats down the stretch before half however, as UNH put together a 9-0 run to take the lead, 25-24 late. Senior Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) quelled the run with a pair of free throws, giving UMBC the lead 25-24 at the break.
McCarley led the Retrievers with 11 points in the half, as the Retrievers outrebounded the Wildcats 28-15, including eight offensive boards.
McNaughton got the second half started with back-to-back threes to give UMBC an early 36-29 lead. However the Wildcats would have the hot shooting hand in the quarter. UNH shot 61 percent from the field in the period to take a 49-44 lead into the fourth.
Junior Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) led the Retriever comeback charge in the fourth, scoring four straight to cut the deficit to just five. However the Wildcats would have an answer, keeping UMBC at bay for most of the quarter. Hagaman had a huge and one late, but New Hampshire held on to win 67-59.
McCarley paced the Retrievers with 17 points, going 7-8 from the foul line. Classmate Pandora Wilson added 14 and ten for another double double. Hagaman and McNaughton had 11 and 12 to help the Retrievers.
UMBC will await the scores from the other games this afternoon to see what seed they will be in the upcoming America East Tournament on Saturday, March 5.
