Baltimore, Md.— UMBC women's basketball got a pair of double-doubles from juniors Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) and Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) in a 62-51 victory against Binghamton on Wednesday. McCarley registered 17 points and ten assists with eight rebounds, while Wilson added 18 points and ten boards as the Retrievers moved to 12-8, 3-4 AE.
UMBC opened things up with a layup by Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan), and from there, the Retrievers dominated a majority of the first quarter. Just minutes after a UMBC steal and bucket, sophomore Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) drove to the bucket, hitting the layup and drawing the foul.
The Bearcats would answer, hitting four straight to take a 9-7 lead thanks to nine points from Alyssa James. The Retrievers had the final say in the quarter, with Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) hitting a buzzer beating three to give UMBC a 14-11 lead after one.
Quarter two saw the Bearcats jump ahead early, taking the lead after a Kim Albrecht triple. However the Retrievers got a spark from McCarley late. The junior picked the pocket of a Bearcat, and finished the fast break layup to cut the deficit to 22-20. She then gave the Dawgs the lead with a mid-range jumper to make it 24-22. From there the stanza went back and forth, until Wilson tipped in the Retriever miss at the horn to give them a 29-24 lead at the break.
After the break, the Retrievers continued to pressure the Bearcats, as McCarley stole the Binghamton pass and fished on the other end. That would be the start of four straight possessions with a steal, forcing a Binghamton timeout with UMBC ahead 35-24. UMBC used an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to extend their lead to 41-24 before Binghamton went on a run. They cut it to as close as 12, but McCarley hit a huge and one to push the lead to 50-35 after three.
In the fourth, Kim Albrecht opened up with a pair of trifectas, but the Retrievers answered with a 7-0 run, sparked by five points from senior Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook). The Retrievers would hold on, winning 62-51.
McCarley added five steals to go along with her 17 points and ten boards. Hagaman finished with eight points and ten caroms, while chipping in two blocks and three steals. The Retrievers shot 41.7% from the field and 83.3% from the charity stripe.
The Retrievers return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 30 at New Hampshire. Tip-off with the Wildcats is set for 1 p.m. in Durham.
