Box Score Baltimore, Md.—Junior forward Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) recorded a career high 26 points on 11-17 shooting, however the Retrievers fell to Stony Brook, 69-60 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. The Retrievers fall to 10-7, 1-3 AE on the year.
Classmate Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) chipped in ten points, adding nine rebounds and four assists in the loss. Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) stuffed the stat line with nine points, eight assists, five steals and four boards. Stony Brook (11-5, 3-0 AE) had four players in double figures, led by Christa Scognamiglio with 15 points, adding 12 caroms in the win. Davion Wingate, Brittany Snow, Aaliyah Worley added 13, 11 and ten respectively.
UMBC controlled play for a majority of the first half, taking a 30-21 lead into the locker rooms. The visitors scored four quick points to start the game, hold the Retrievers in check early. With just over five minutes left in the quarter UMBC got on the scoreboard, thanks to Wilson layup. From there the Retriever offense sparked a run that gave them a 12-9 lead, and took a 15-11 lead after the first stanza.
The second quarter saw the Retrievers jump ahead 21-13 thanks to a 9-0 run fueled by a Wilson jumper and a pair of free throws by McCarley. UMBC controlled the pace of play, grabbing their largest lead of the day at 13 after a Hagaman layup. The Seawolves closed the gap late in the quarter, cutting the deficit to nine at the break at 30-21.
After the break, the Retrievers kept their tempo, keeping the lead until a push by Stony Brook midway through the period gave them the lead. The Seawolves put together a 16-0 run at the end of the quarter to give them a 42-39 advantage, and would lead 42-41 after three.
The final period saw each side go back and forth, as the score was tied four in the fourth quarter alone. With the score tied 51-51 with three minutes to go, neither team could find the basket, and the teams would be tied with three seconds to go. Wilson had a shot at the buzzer, but her turnaround went in and out and the two sides went to overtime.
In the extra frame, Stony Brook controlled play, outscoring the Retrievers 18-9 in the extra session. The Seawolves scored ten straight to open the frame, and would hold on to win 69-60.
Wilson poured in a career high 26 points and seven rebounds on 11-17 shooting with four blocks. The 11 made field goals and four blocks were also career highs for the junior. UMBC as a team shot 35.5% including 30% from three. The Seawolves finished at 35% while also going 17-24 from the charity stripe.
The Retrievers will head to UMass Lowell on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tipoff with the River Hawks is slated for 1 p.m.
