BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's tennis team continued its outstanding fall season by winning four of six matches versus Villanova in the morning and taking three of five against Richmond to conclude the weekend's competition at the 2015 UMBC Fall Invitational.
Against Villanova, the Retrievers won three of five singles events and the lone doubles match in the 5+1 format.
UMBC freshman Maria Siopacha (Limassol, Cyprus) competed at the No. 1 singles slot and cruised past Villanova's Victoria Martinez, 6-2, 6-1.
Junior Hanna Victorsson (Hagersten, Sweden) moved into the No. 3 singles position and won a tense battle with the Wildcats' Ellie Zimmerman, prevailing 11-9 in the super tie-break to win, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9.
Sophomore Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) provided UMBC's other singles victory, capturing the No. 4 flight match, 6-4, 6-2, over Alex Krogius.
The doubles tandem of Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) and Charlotte Tonjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) proved to be a solid pairing as the Retrievers produced multiple breaks of serve in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Siopacha continued her dominating play in the afternoon, defeating Gaby Rosales, 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 flight. Victorsson edged Kelsey Williams, 6-3, 6-3, and Dolashvili bounced back from a first-set loss to outlast Bella Kuse, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
UMBC will have some recovery time before competing in the ITA Regionals in Lynchburg, Va. Oct. 15-18.
