UMBC Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak With 55-52 Overtime Win at UMES

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – UMBC women's basketball's junior guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) knocked down 12-of-14 free throw attempts and registered her first 20-point effort of the season to help guide the Retrievers to a 55-52 overtime victory against UMES in non-conference action at William P. Hytche Athletic Center, extending the Retrievers' win streak to five games.

McCarley's effort moved her into seventh all-time at UMBC in career free throws made (288) and ninth in free throws attempted (423). Senior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Hawks scored the first four points of overtime, but McCarley and Garner combined for all seven of the Retrievers' points to give UMBC the three-point advantage. UMES had a chance to tie the game with 17 seconds to go, but turned the ball over without getting a shot off, helping the Retrievers to improve to 2-1 on the season in overtime games.

Despite the Retrievers turning the ball over 17 times, UMBC was able to convert UMES' 28 turnovers into 20 points. The Retrievers also pulled down 16 offensive rebounds for 21 second chance points. Junior forward Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) pulled down 10 rebounds, including three offensive boards. Garner added four offensive rebounds and junior guard Chukwuma Chiamaka (Lagos, Nigeria/Eastern Arizona College) pulled down three offensive rebounds.

The Retrievers' five-game win streak is their first since the 2010-11 season when UMBC won seven in a row. The Dawgs improve to 7-3 on the season, while UMES falls to 3-8 on the year.

UMBC got off to a slow start, knocking down just 7.1 percent of its shots in the first quarter and turning the ball over five times to fall behind 12-5. The Retrievers picked up their shooting in the second quarter and kept their turnovers to three to trail the Hawks, 20-18, at the half.

The Retrievers outscored the Hawks, 16-7, in the first nine minutes of the third quarter, but UMES' Moengaroa Subritzky scored the final seven points of the period to trail by four, 36-32, with 10 minutes to go in regulation. Subritzky finished with a team-best 18 points and five rebounds.

UMBC's lead was erased 2:01 into the fourth quarter as UMES tallied the first five points of the period to regain the lead, 37-36. The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the period, but neither were able to take control in the final minute of play with the game tied. TeAmber Burke and Alexis Udoji combined for 11 of UMES' 16 points in the fourth quarter to help force overtime. Burke finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Udoji tallied five points, five rebounds and five blocks.
