Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball's Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) recorded her first collegiate double-double, registering a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds to help the Retrievers defeat Coppin State, 68-61 in double-overtime in non-conference action at the Physical Education Complex Arena on Thursday afternoon.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the first overtime as eight of the 10 points in the period came from the free throw line. UMBC's Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and CSU's Keena Samuels traded baskets to start the second overtime, but the Retrievers held Coppin State to just one point over the final 3:47 of the second overtime, while Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson combined for the game's final eight points en route to the victory.
McCarley finished with nine points and four rebounds, while Chiamaka chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and three steals before fouling out in the second overtime. Coppin State's Janelle Lane paced the Eagles with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks and Omaah Tayong recorded a double-double of her own with 12 points and 13 rebounds before also fouling out.
UMBC picks up its first victory of the season to improve to 1-2, while Coppin State falls to 0-3 on the year. The victory marks the first for the Retrievers at Coppin State since 1987.
After recording a four-point advantage at the break, Coppin State matched its largest lead of the contest with a bucket from Lane to open the second half, but Castaldo drilled her first shot of the period from long range and red-shirt sophomore Stixz Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) added a pair of free throws to trim the Retrievers' deficit to one, 30-29, less than two minutes into the third quarter.
UMBC took its first lead since the first quarter with a bucket from Pandora Wilson with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter. The Retrievers' finished with six of the last eight points of the period, to outscore the Eagles, 16-7, in the quarter and take a 40-35 lead.
The Retrievers held off the Eagles throughout most of the fourth, but CSU made a final push behind Lane and Amber Griffin, pulling within one on a pair of Lane free throws and grabbing the 52-51 lead following a layup from Griffin with 42 seconds left. Pandora Wilson gave the Retrievers the one-point lead on an offensive rebound and put back, but Jordan Swails tied up the contest at 53 by hitting one-of-two free throws. The Retrievers had a chance to finish the game at the end of regulation, but UMBC was unable to get a shot off for the victory.
UMBC shot 30.8 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free throw line in the two overtimes, while CSU looked to have run out of gas, hitting 20.0 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the charity stripe during extra time.
Both teams proved their ability to get on the offensive glass, as CSU finished with 20 offensive rebounds, while the Retrievers snagged 14, six coming from Pandora Wilson and four from Chiamaka. UMBC forced the Eagles into 34 turnovers, while committing 21 giveaways of its own. The Retrievers finished with 24 points off of turnovers to CSU's 10.
