BETHESDA, Md. – Senior right-hander Stephen Chrzanowski (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Hagerstown CC) pitched a career-best eight innings, striking out a UMBC season-best 11 hitters, and freshman Conor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh with an RBI ground out as UMBC defeated Georgetown, 4-3, Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.

Chrzanowki (1-1), who previous longest outing was 6.1 in his final outing of last season, gave up two runs in the first, but limited Georgetown (17-27) to just one run on five hits the rest of the way.  Sophomore Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) gave up a two-out double and then issued a walk, but struck out Eric Webber looking to end the game and earn his second save of the season.

In a staff outing, Patrick Camporini (0-1) took the loss as UMBC (15-24) rallied for the single run in the top of the seventh to break the tie.

Georgetown starter Joseph Bialkowski worked out of a bases load jam in the opening frame and the Hoyas gave him a lead in the bottom half, scoring a pair of runs with two outs.  Camporini slapped a single through the right side to bring in the first run and then Bialkowski helped his own cause with an RBI double to left center.

Both pitchers kept the opposition off the board in the second before the Retrievers grinded out three runs in the top of the third to take the lead, 3-2.  Nick Leonard relieved Bialkowski to start the inning, but freshman Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) reached on an error by the third baseman and junior Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) followed with a single to center.  Casali was erased on a fielder's choice interference call, but junior Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) drew a walk to loaded the sacks. 

Freshman Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) opened the Retrievers' account by driving a ball to center for a sac fly to score Corbi and cut the GU lead to 2-1.  Senior Brandon Coluccio (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township/Brookdale CC) walked to jam the base paths again and senior D.J. Smith (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) cashed in by dumping a two-RBI single to left to give UMBC the lead, 3-2.

Two innings later the Hoyas pulled level, though, as Beau Hall sent a lead-off double down the left field line, and after a strike out, Kuzbel doubled off of Chrzanowski to knot the game at 3-3.

UMBC threatened in the fifth, leaving two runners on, and then sophomore Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Hax reached second and third with one out in the six, but were stranded following a walk, pop out, and fielder's choice.

Chrzanowski faced just seven batters in the two innings combined and was rewarded in the top of the seventh.  Dolshun started the inning with a base hit to center and then moved to second on a sac bunt by Coluccio.  Smith then lined a single to the outfield to push Dolshun to third, before Hax brought him in with what proved to be the game-winning run on a bouncing ground out to the right side.

The tall right-hander sent the Hoyas down in order in the seventh and then stranded a runner in the eighth to complete his outing.

Mikush entered to start the bottom of the ninth and got two quick outs on a fly ball to center and a swinging strike out.  Kuzbel doubled the keep the game going and then Ryan Busch drew a walk, but Mikush settled down to get Webber looking to end it.

UMBC now returns home for a final four-game home stand beginning on Friday with a single game against America East rival Stony Brook.  First pitch at Alumni Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

DAWG BITES

-          UMBC has won back-to-back games against Georgetown and now leads the all-time series, 29-16.

-          The Retrievers and Hoyas will meet again on May 13 in Baltimore.  UMBC will honor long-time head coach John Jancuska prior to the game which is set for a 6:00 p.m. start.

-          Chrzanowski's previous longest outing was 6.1 innings on May 17, 2013 at Maine.

-          His 11 strike outs tops Shane Vlasic's nine against Coppin State on April 16 for the top individual performance of the year.

-          Five different UMBC pitchers have recorded at least one save this season.

-          The Retrievers have now stolen a base in five straight games.

-          UMBC played error-free baseball for the eighth time this year and is now 3-5 when not making a defensive miscue.

-          Casali has hit safely in seven consecutive games.  He had a 14-game streak earlier in the season.
