BOSTON – UMBC women's basketball
senior guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess
Anne/American) tabbed six takeaways to become the Retrievers'
single-season leader in steals and added a team-high 15 points, but
it was not enough to stop a hot shooting afternoon for Boston
University, as the Terriers went on to defeat UMBC, 72-51, in
America East action at Case Gym.
BU received a combined 40 points from veteran guards Chantell
Alford and Mo Moran on Senior Day. Alford finished with a game-high
26 points and five assists to garner America East Player of the
Game honors, while Harris earned the award for the Retrievers. UMBC
Senior guard Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre
Dame Academy/American) added nine points and 10 rebounds in her
second start of the year, while sophomore forward Ashley
Lambert (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) chipped in 10
points.
UMBC (10-17, 6-8 AE) snaps its three-game win streak and falls
for just the second time in six games, while Boston University
(23-5, 13-2 AE) avoids back-to-back losses and wins its seventh
contest in its last eight tries.
The Retrievers gave BU a seven-point cushion, before Harris got
UMBC going with a runner in the lane. The black and gold would make
three of its next four shots to knot up the game at nine
apiece.
With the game tied up at 14, the Terriers used a 10-0 run behind
a pair of treys from junior guard Danielle Callahan and Alford
added a layup and a tip-in to give BU a 24-14 advantage. The
Retrievers missed seven straight shots during the run and were held
scoreless for 6:16.
UMBC chipped away at the deficit with Lambert sinking a pair of
free throws and Harris knocking down a short jumper, to come within
six at 24-18 at the 4:57 mark. With the Retrievers shooting just
29.6 percent from the floor in the opening half, the Terriers were
able to extent their lead back to 10 at the break, 30-20.
The two teams started off the second half sluggish, misfiring on
the first nine shots from the field, but action picked up with the
teams connecting on each of the next eight, bringing UMBC within
single-digits, 40-32 with 14:55 remaining.
With Coles forced to the bench less than a minute later with her
fourth foul, the Terriers looked to put the game away starting with
a three-point play from junior forward Rashidat Agboola, but UMBC
freshman guard Kayla Seymour (Raleigh, N.C./Panther
Creek) stepped in and knocked down back-to-back treys for the
Retrievers to come within seven, 47-40. That is as close as the
Retrievers would get, as a pair of threes from Alford and Moran
sparked an 18-4 BU run, which closed the door on the Retrievers
longest win streak of the season. The Terriers shot 52 percent from
the floor in the second half and 48.2 percent for the game.
The Retrievers celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday, Feb. 27,
when they welcome Hartford to the RAC Arena for their final home
contest of the regular season.
