UMBC Women's Basketball Holds Off Maine, 54-50

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball sophomore guard Bria White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood) scored 14 of her team-high 15 points in the second half, to help the Retrievers pick up their first conference victory of the season, a 54-50 win versus Maine in America East action on Saturday afternoon at the RAC Arena.

White, UMBC's America East Player of the Game, was one of three Retrievers that finished in double-digit points. Senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison) added 12 points, while classmate Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Despite an 11-point deficit at the break, Maine (1-13, 0-1 AE) was able to tie the game at 30 after starting the second half on a 19-8 run. UMBC (5-10, 1-1 AE) took control back after a layup from Crowell and would lead by as many as seven with 17 seconds remaining. The Black Bears did not go down quietly, as they came within two points with six seconds to go, however, a pair of free throws from Harris with four seconds on the clock sealed the victory for the Retrievers.

Maine's America East Player of the Game Courtney Anderson finished the afternoon with a game-high 17 points, all of which came in the second half. Senior forward Corinne Wellington chipped in six points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

UMBC opened an 8-3 advantage against the Black Bears following a short jumper from senior center Kim Browning (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover), her second bucket in the opening five minutes. Crowell helped to extend the lead to seven, 14-7, draining her first two shots from three-point range.

Maine connected on just three of its first 20 shots and turned the ball over 11 times in the opening half. A layup from junior guard Ashleigh Roberts – two of her team-best eight first-half points – with 3:39 to go ended an 8:19 field goal drought for the Black Bears, and put a halt on an 11-2 UMBC run, for a 22-11 Retrievers lead. The score would remain that way until the break, as neither team shot well in the opening half.

Maine's 11 first half points was the lowest total allowed in the opening half by a Retriever opponent this season. The Black Bears finished the period 4-for-27 (.148), while UMBC connected on 7-of-27 (.259).

UM opened the half on a 19-8 run, behind 10 points from Anderson, including the game-tying three with 12:15 to go in the contest. Crowell laid the ball in for the go-ahead two, giving the Retrievers the lead for good. White followed with a pair of jumpers to put UMBC back out in front 36-30. An Anderson trey was sandwiched by two more White buckets, giving the Retrievers a seven-point advantage, 40-33.

Maine came back within one, 42-41, after scoring six straight points, but White converted on a jumper, drew the foul and finished the three-point play, followed by a three from Crowell that all but sealed the deal for the Retrievers.

A layup from Wellington, followed by a UMBC turnover and a long three from freshman guard Lauren Bodine brought Maine within two, 52-50 with six seconds left. UMBC was able to get the ball inbounds and Harris took care of the rest at the free throw line. The Retrievers connected on eight-of-nine shots from the charity stripe in the second half and shot a season-high 82.4 percent for the game (14-for-17).

The Retrievers hit the road in America East action on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when it takes on New Hampshire. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Lundholm Gym.
