BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball
senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn
Park/James Madison) led the Retrievers in scoring for the
third-straight game to earn America East Player of the Game honors,
while senior guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach,
Va./Princess Anne/American) notched double-digit points for the
seventh consecutive game, but it was not enough as a 15-0 Boston
run in the second half proved to be the difference as the Terriers
picked up a 63-49 victory in Saturday afternoon's America East
contest at the RAC Arena.
BU's Rashidat Agboola, Chantell Alford and Mo Moran each
recorded double-digit points and combined for 50 of Boston's 63
points in the contest. Agboola, the Terriers' America East Player
of the Game, nearly tabbed a double-double, finishing with 21
points and nine rebounds, while Alford shot seven-for-nine from the
floor and four-for-five from beyond the arc to finish with 18
points. Alford also added six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Moran chipped in 11 points and a game-high nine assists.
Boston (17-4, 7-1 AE) rebounded from its first conference loss
of the season by shooting 45.6 percent from the floor, while UMBC
(6-14, 2-5 AE) shot 28.6 percent from the floor in the second half
and 32.8 percent for the game to fall for the fourth time in the
last five games.
UMBC struggled in the early going, connecting two of its first
nine shots, allowing the Terriers to jump out in front 9-2, after
five-straight points from the reigning America East Player of the
Year Alford. BU would lead by as many as 11 in the first half,
before a 10-0 run from the Retrievers – thanks to scoring
from four different players – brought UMBC back within one,
18-17, with 8:46 to go in the period.
Harris and Crowell would go on to shoot four-for-six in the
final eight minutes, accounting for the rest of the Retrievers'
scoring in the first half, including a trey from Crowell, three of
her 13 first half points, with 2:53 left in the stanza to give UMBC
its first lead of the afternoon. Moran would hit a short jumper
1:06 later, giving the Terriers a one-point advantage at the break,
32-31.
UMBC took the lead out of the break on a layup from Crowell, but
Alford had the response, connecting on a jumper, to take back the
lead. The Retrievers would go back out in front for the final time
of the afternoon on a layup by junior center Dana
Lewis (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead), 35-34. Just 12 seconds later,
Moran gave the Terriers the lead for good, sparking a 15-0 run over
a 6:38 time span.
Harris tried to chip away at the lead, but Agboola scored 13 of
her game-high 21 points in the second half, to help the Terriers
extend to a 17 point advantage, 39-56, with 8:12 to help solidify
the contest.
UMBC returns to the court for America
East action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when the Retrievers host
Binghamton. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the RAC Arena.
