Box Score
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball
senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn
Park/James Madison) matched a career-high and led the Retrievers'
four double-digit scorers with 25 points, as a record crowd of
2,905 poured into the RAC Arena for UMBC's eighth annual Midday
Madness. The Retrievers shot a season-best 48.1 percent from the
floor as a national audience witnessed UMBC's 70-59 victory against
America East foe Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon.
Crowell, the Retrievers' America East Player of the Game, shot
at a .600 clip from the floor and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc
in the contest and added eight rebounds as she played all 40
minutes for the Retrievers. Senior guard Raven
Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) scored in
double-digit points for the sixth consecutive game, finishing with
17 points, to go along with a game-high seven assists, five
rebounds and four steals.
The victory snapped a three-game skid for the Retrievers, who
improved to 6-13 on the season and 2-4 in America East play. Stony
Brook (11-8, 3-3 AE) fell for the second time in three games and
have dropped six straight games to UMBC.
Behind a roaring crowd of elementary and middle school locals,
the Retrievers build a seven-point cushion following a three from
sophomore guard Bria White (Silver Spring,
Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood). Stony Brook connected on four
of its first 18 shots from the floor to allow UMBC to extend its
lead to as many as 11 in the opening half. White notched nine of
her 12 points of the first stanza.
Seawolves junior guard Chikilra Goodman helped spark a 9-2 run
over a 1:57 span to cut the SBU deficit to four, 21-17, with 5:21
to go in the period, but UMBC closed the half on an 11-6 run,
behind six points from sophomore forward Ashley
Lambert (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend), to take a nine-point
advantage into the locker room. Lambert finished the afternoon with
11 points, connecting on five-of-seven attempts.
UMBC drained six of its first seven shots of the second half,
including seven-straight points from Crowell, to extend its lead
back up to 12 points, 42-30. Stony Brook failed to go down without
a fight, clawing its way back within six, 47-41, following
back-to-back layups from Goodman.
Despite the Seawolves full court pressure, the Retrievers
quickly responded, breaking the press and getting layups on three
straight possessions to build the lead back up to 12.
SBU tried for one final push, pulling back within six, 58-52,
with 2:21 left after UMBC failed to score on four consecutive
possession, but Crowell put the nail in the coffin picking up a
transition bucket and following with her third three of the
afternoon. The Seawolves would come no closer than 10 points down
the stretch, as UMBC held on to pick up its fifth home victory of
the season.
Goodman earned America East Player of the Game honors for Stony
Brook, finishing with a team-best 15 points, to go with six
rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Sabre
Proctor added 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Dani
Klupenfer chipped in 11 points.
