BALTIMORE, Md. – Trailing, 6-5, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the UMBC baseball team (2-7) scored ten runs over the next three innings, and came back to defeat in-state rival Navy, 15-6, Friday evening at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.

The Retrievers' 15 runs is their highest offensive output so far this season.

Six different Retrievers recorded multi-hit games against Navy, led by freshman Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) who each picked up three hits in four at-bats on Friday.

Barnes also picked up a career-high three RBI, while connecting for the first extra-base hit of his career, a double in the fourth inning.

Senior Josh Dick (Winchester, Va./James Wood) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to pick up his first win (1-0) of the campaign.

Anthony Parenti (1-1) took the loss for the Midshipmen after giving up five runs, none of them earned, in one inning of work.

UMBC was forced to comeback right out of the gate as Navy plated a run in the top of the first on a double by Nikolai Simonsen.  The Retrievers responded quickly however, scoring three runs their own in the bottom half, taking the lead, 3-1, on a two-RBI double by junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC).

After a scoreless second inning, Navy struck back, crossing the plate four times in the top of the third to retake the lead, 5-3.

Brandon Beans extended the Mids' lead to three runs, 6-3, with a solo homer to lead off the top of the fourth.  Freshman Jon Cobo (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) finished the inning for the Retrievers, but did not go back out for the fifth, earning a no decision after the Retrievers made the come back.

UMBC inched closer in the bottom half, with Barnes plating senior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) with a double, and then scoring on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one, 6-5.

After senior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) threw his second scoreless inning in relief of Cobo, the Retrievers tied the game on a sacrifice fly from D.J. Smith (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) which brought Schickner into score.

UMBC broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs while eight batters came to the plate.  With Himmelstein and freshman Anthony Gatto (Hauppage, N.Y./Smithtown West) on base, Barnes made the breakthrough for the hosts stroking a two-RBI single up the middle giving, UMBC the lead, 8-6.

Leading, 11-6, heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Retrievers scored four more times to provide the final margin, 15-6.

The home-and-home series now shifts south to Annapolis where UMBC and Navy will meet once each on Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday's first pitch between the Retrievers and Mids at Max Bishop Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.  UMBC will send Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) to the mound tomorrow to counter Navy's Johnny Schoberl.

-           UMBC's 15 runs against Navy is the biggest offensive output of the year for the Retrievers. The squads previous high was 10 runs scored against Army on Mar. 4.
