The Retrievers responded quickly however, scoring three runs their own in the bottom half, taking the lead, 3-1, on a two-RBI double by junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC).
After a scoreless second inning, Navy struck back, crossing the plate four times in the top of the third to retake the lead, 5-3.

After senior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) threw his second scoreless inning in relief of Cobo, the Retrievers tied the game on a sacrifice fly from D.J. Smith (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) which brought Schickner into score.
UMBC broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs while eight batters came to the plate. With Himmelstein and freshman Anthony Gatto (Hauppage, N.Y./Smithtown West) on base, Barnes made the breakthrough for the hosts stroking a two-RBI single up the middle giving, UMBC the lead, 8-6.
