Box Score 11/9/2012
BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore
guards Lauren Chase(Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Bria
White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood)
combined for 33 points, but it was not enough to overcome the
Retrievers' sluggish first half as three Lady Bears scored in
double-figures to help Morgan State pick up a 72-61 victory in
Friday night's 2012-13 women's basketball season-opener at Hill
Field House.
Chase finished with a game-high 18 points, while White added 15
points, six rebounds and a career-high two blocks for the
Retrievers.
Morgan State (1-0), who played its first season-opener at home
since 2004, jumped out in front 5-0 before a pair of free throws
from Chase put UMBC (0-1) on the board. However, the Lady
Bears responded with a bucket from Hicks and a three-point play
from senior guard Bianca Jarrett as MSU extended its lead to
10-2.
UMBC struggled to convert on the offensive end and allowed the
Lady Bears in on the offensive boards en route to a 13-3 MSU run
over a 6:06 span to take a 14 point advantage, 24-10.

The Retrievers looked to have shaken off the rust, mounting an
11-2 run, behind four points from White, a bucket and pair of free
throws from senior guard Raven
Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) and a
layup from sophomore forward Ashley
Lambert(Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend), to come within three
points, 28-25, with 4:35 to go in the half.
Morgan State recovered, jumping back out in transition, scoring
all 10 points in the final 4:11, including a pair of buckets from
Jarrett – four of her nine first half points.
UMBC shot 26.5 percent from the field in the opening half and
turned the ball over 11 times en route to a 12-point halftime
deficit, 40-28. White finished the first half with 12 of UMBC's 28
points.
The Lady Bears continued to add to their lead out of the break.
A steal and a layup from senior guard Moneshia Davis with 16:16
remaining gave Morgan State its largest lead of the evening, 49-31.
However, Harris sparked the Retrievers with an old-fashioned
three-point play as UMBC would go on to score seven-straight
points.
Morgan State worked the lead back up to 16 points on a layup by
sophomore guard Chyress Lockhart, but Chase's efforts - scoring
eight of UMBC's 11 points over the 5:27 span – along with a
trey from freshman guard Kayla
Seymour (Raleigh, N.C./Panther Creek) brought the
Retrievers back within 11 with 10:38 remaining. UMBC would bring
the game within 11 two more times, but was unable to bring the
deficit back into single digits, as MSU slowed the ball down and
Jarrett, Davis and sophomore guard Tracey Carrington converted on
the offensive end – combining for the Lady Bear's final 14
points.
Morgan State shot at a .524 clip from the floor in the second
half and 42.6 percent overall in the game. MSU held advantages at
points in the paint (42-22), second chance points (22-8) and
rebounding (45-38).
Despite foul trouble, Jarrett finished with a team-high 14
points, while Carrington added 11 points and nine rebounds and
Davis chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Lockhart dished out
a game-high eight assists to go along with eight points. Head coach
Donald Beasley earned his 100th victory at Morgan State in the
win.
