WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UMBC women's
basketball team shot 52.2 percent in the opening half, but were
unable to regroup from an 18-0 American run on Tuesday night at
Bender Arena, as the Retrievers fell 85-57 in their first road
contest since the season-opener on Nov. 9.
UMBC has dropped three of its last four contests to fall to 3-4,
while American (2-3) won its second straight and its home
opener.
Sophomore guard Bria
White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood)
led the Retrievers in scoring for the third-consecutive game,
finishing with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Senior
guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess
Anne/American) chipped in 11 points, five assists, three steals and
three rebounds in her return to Bender Arena.

American had three players reach double-digit points, including
a game-high 21 points from the reigning Patriot League Player of
the Week sophomore guard Jen Dumiak. Dumiak shot at a .600 clip
from the field (9-for-15) and added six assists and five rebounds
in the winning effort.
Both teams shot well in the opening 10 minutes of action, with
American drilling four of its first six three-point attempts and
the Retrievers retaliating by hitting eight of their first 11 shots
from the field. The Eagles were able to take advantage of offensive
rebounds and UMBC turnovers to help build an 11-point lead with
5:19 to go in the half. The Retrievers scored nine-straight points
behind White, Harris and sophomore guard Ashley
Lambert (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) to come within
two, 34-32.
American, who finished the half with seven three-pointers, held
the Retrievers scoreless for the final 2:53 and entered the break
on a 10-0 run to build a 40-32 lead. Dumiak and junior guard Alexis
Dobbs helped to trigger the run with back-to-back treys. Dobbs
finished the half with 11 of her 18 points and shot 4-for-7 from
beyond the arc.
With the Retrievers failing to connect on five of their first
six shots in the second half, the Eagles continued their run,
scoring the first eight points of the period, to extend their lead
to 20, 52-32 with 17:42 remaining. UMBC was unable to recover as
the Eagles would go on to shoot 57.1 percent in the half and lead
by as many as 34.
UMBC turned the ball over 21 times in the game and shot 8-for-26
(.308) in the second half. The Retrievers were outrebounded 36-24,
including 13 offensive rebounds for American.
The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2 when they
travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Tigers. Tip-off is set for
2 p.m. inside Jadwin Gym.
DAWG NOTES
-The Retrievers contest at American marked their first road
contest since the season-opener on Nov. 9 at Morgan State.
-American holds a slight advantage in the all-time series, 8-5 and
have won five of seven games on their home
court.
-UMBC allowed 10 three-pointers for the second-straight game.
-The Retrievers surrendered 80 points for the first time since it
fell 45-85 to Hartford on Feb. 2, 2010.
-Senior guard Raven Harris and senior forward Kristin Coles made their return to American for
the first time since transferring to UMBC. Harris spent the 2008-09
and the 2009-10 season with the Eagles, making 53 appearances and
24 starts in two seasons. Coles, who did not see action tonight,
was a member of the American squad in 2008-09, appearing in 23
contests as a freshman.
-Harris, who entered the week ranked 14th in the nation in steals
per game (4.0), registered three steals, the sixth time this season
that she has recorded three-or-more steals.
-Sophomore guard Bria
White has double-digit points in five of seven games thus
far this season. She is averaging 14.5 points per game when coming
off the bench in 2012-13.
-Freshman center Keri
Kleist logged a career-high 20 minutes and pulled down a
career-best six rebounds.
