Women's Basketball Outlasted by American, 85-57

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UMBC women's basketball team shot 52.2 percent in the opening half, but were unable to regroup from an 18-0 American run on Tuesday night at Bender Arena, as the Retrievers fell 85-57 in their first road contest since the season-opener on Nov. 9.

UMBC has dropped three of its last four contests to fall to 3-4, while American (2-3) won its second straight and its home opener.

Sophomore guard Bria White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood) led the Retrievers in scoring for the third-consecutive game, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) chipped in 11 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds in her return to Bender Arena.

American had three players reach double-digit points, including a game-high 21 points from the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week sophomore guard Jen Dumiak. Dumiak shot at a .600 clip from the field (9-for-15) and added six assists and five rebounds in the winning effort.

Both teams shot well in the opening 10 minutes of action, with American drilling four of its first six three-point attempts and the Retrievers retaliating by hitting eight of their first 11 shots from the field. The Eagles were able to take advantage of offensive rebounds and UMBC turnovers to help build an 11-point lead with 5:19 to go in the half. The Retrievers scored nine-straight points behind White, Harris and sophomore guard Ashley Lambert (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) to come within two, 34-32.

American, who finished the half with seven three-pointers, held the Retrievers scoreless for the final 2:53 and entered the break on a 10-0 run to build a 40-32 lead. Dumiak and junior guard Alexis Dobbs helped to trigger the run with back-to-back treys. Dobbs finished the half with 11 of her 18 points and shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.

With the Retrievers failing to connect on five of their first six shots in the second half, the Eagles continued their run, scoring the first eight points of the period, to extend their lead to 20, 52-32 with 17:42 remaining. UMBC was unable to recover as the Eagles would go on to shoot 57.1 percent in the half and lead by as many as 34.

UMBC turned the ball over 21 times in the game and shot 8-for-26 (.308) in the second half. The Retrievers were outrebounded 36-24, including 13 offensive rebounds for American.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Tigers. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside Jadwin Gym.
