BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore
guard Lauren Chase(Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) notched
double-figure points for the fourth-straight contest, pouring in a
game-high 18 points, but the Retrievers shot 29.2 percent from the
field in the second half to make way for a 68-55 Loyola victory in
Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's basketball matchup
at the RAC Arena. Junior guard Nicole Krusen and senior guard Katie
Sheahin each tabbed double-doubles, as four Greyhounds finished in
double-digit points.
UMBC (2-2) fell for the first time on its home court this
season, moving to 2-2 in non-conference action. Loyola (1-2) picked
up its first victory of the season and snapped a two-game losing
streak to the Retrievers.
With neither team shooting well in the second half of play, it
was the Greyhounds that were able to mount a 15-5 run over a 4:46
span to break the game open. The Retrievers, who only turned the
ball over six times in the second half, went scoreless for 7:12
during the second half.

The Greyhounds exploded out of the gates, making 10 of their
first 11 shots, including four-of-five from three-point range to
take a 24-17 lead. The Retrievers weathered the storm, behind
production from Chase and senior guard Raven
Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American), and
took their first lead of the ballgame on a layup from Chase with
9:46 to go in the half. Chase finished the period with 15 of her 18
points.
Loyola shot 57.1 percent in the opening half and used a 9-0 run
over a 3:20 stretch to take a four-point advantage into the break,
38-34. The Retrievers, who entered the game averaging 17.3
turnovers per game, turned the ball over just three times in the
first 20 minutes of action and nine times in the game.
Despite tying the game on a three-pointer from sophomore
guard Bria White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy
Chase/Longwood) at the 18:08 mark of the second period and taking
its only lead of the second half on a layup from Harris, the
Retrievers made just five more field goals the rest of the game,
going 5-for-22 from the floor in the final 14:52. Harris finished
the contest with 14 points, while White added nine points.
Sheahin, the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2012
Preseason Player of the Year, led the Greyhounds with 16 points and
10 assists. Krusen added 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Junior forward Nneka Offodile chipped in 13 points and freshman
guard Diana Logan provided 10 points off the bench.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 17 against
Towson. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the RAC Arena and is
followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's contest against Central Connecticut
State.
