Five Score in Double-Figures for Women's Basketball in Overtime Victory Over Coppin State, 83-75

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison) and sophomore guard Lauren Chase (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) each picked up double- doubles as five Retrievers scored in double- figures in an 83-75 overtime victory against Coppin State in Wednesday night's non- conference women's basketball game at the RAC Arena.

Crowell finished with 19 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and Chase poured in a team-best 22 points and dished out 10 assists, but it was senior guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) who drained the go-ahead three in overtime with the shot clock expiring that proved to be the difference maker. Harris' three, her first of the season, broke a 74-74 tie with 2:32 and gave UMBC a three-point lead that it would not relinquish as the Retrievers outscored Coppin State 13-5 in the extra period. Harris chipped in six of her 14 points during overtime.

The black and gold (2-1), in the midst of a five-game homestand, has won two-straight, while Coppin State (1-2) has dropped two in a row.

UMBC exploded out of the gates, hitting four of its first five attempts, but a three-point play from junior forward Kyra Coleman sparked an 18-2 Eagles run over 4:42 span, giving Coppin State a nine-point lead, 20-11, with 12:25 to go in the half. CSU scored 14 of its first 20 points inside the paint and turned seven offensive rebounds into seven points during the spurt. Coleman finished with a game-high 24 points and chipped in nine rebounds.

UMBC shot its highest percentage of the season in the opening 20 minutes, draining 16-of-28 shots (.571), including a 14-1 run over the final 4:25, en route to a seven-point advantage at the break, 38-31. The Retrievers shared the ball in the opening half, registering 12 assists and having seven different players score a point.

The Retrievers cooled off in the second half, shooting at a .296 clip, and were plagued by turnovers, allowing the Eagles back in the game. UMBC, who turned the ball over 11 times in the period, would fall behind by as much as five in the second half, before a free throw from Chase and a shot from behind the arc from sophomore guard Bria White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood) with 2:34 to go in the game, gave the Retrievers their first lead since the 10:44 mark, 66-65. White would finish with 10 points on the night.

UMBC hit all four of its free throws down the stretch of regulation, but it was not enough to put the Eagles down, as Coleman grabbed an offensive rebound and laid in the equalizer, 70-70, with 19 seconds to go. UMBC had a chance for the game-winner on a jumper from Chase with the clock winding down, but was unable to connect.

Sophomore guard/forward Ashley Lambert (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) recorded double-digit points for the first time in her career, hitting four-of-eight shots for 12 points.

Senior guard Leola Spotwood registered a double-double for CSU with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Shawtae Payne added 13 points.

UMBC returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17, when it takes on Loyola. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the RAC Arena.
