Baseball Finishes 2010 Season with Two Heartbreaking Losses to Maine, 6-2 and 5-3

BALTIMORE - The UMBC baseball team dropped two hard-fought games to Maine, 6-2 and 5-3, Saturday afternoon to conclude the 2010 season. UMBC finishes the season 9-39 (4-20 America East), while Maine finishes its regular season 34-20 (17-7 AEC).

In the first game, junior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field to put the Retrievers on the board in the fifth inning.

In the sixth, sophomore Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) singled in fellow sophomore Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) bring the score to 4-2.

Senior starter Kevin Clark (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Catonsville C.C.) (0-8) pitched a complete game in his final game in a Retriever uniform, striking out three.

Maine starter Myckie Lugbauer (2-0) allowed one run in five innings of work to earn the win. Justin Latta pitched the final two innings to earn his fourth save.

In the second game, senior Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) struck out four in seven innings of work, completing his colligiate career with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. Bach finishes his UMBC tenure with 298.1 innings pitched, the second-most in school history and 195 strikeouts, the fourth most.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth, junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led off with a walk before moving to second on a sophomore Curtis Schickner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) single. Junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) followed with a single down the left field line to score Phillips.

After a double play, junior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) singled to left to score Schickner to bring the score to 5-3, but that would finish the scoring on the day.

Bach (4-9) took the loss, while Jimmy Cox (1-0) earned the win for the Black Bears. Latta pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
