ARLINGTON, Va. - The UMBC baseball team rallied down three in the eighth inning, but a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth allowed George Washington to down the Retrievers, 9-7, in Arlington, Va. on Tuesday afternoon.

Down 7-4 going into the eighth, UMBC (0-4) sophomore Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) walked before a fellow sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) single. Freshman Aaron Brill (Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) walked to load the bases and junior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) walked to score Lamborn.

After a pitcher change, sophomore Mike Lafferty (Annapolis, Md./Mount St. Joseph/Marietta College) singled in Pesci and junior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) added a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame at 7, but a two-run home run by Paul Pakan gave the Colonials (7-4) the lead for good.

Pesci, who made his first start as a hitter for the Retrievers, had two hits and scored two runs.

UMBC senior starter Andrew Germuth (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding/Mount St. Mary's) allowed five runs in four innings of work in his first appearance for the Retrievers. Sophomore Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) (0-1) took the loss.

Colonial starter Jeff Griffith allowed one earned run in six innings pitched. Marshall Seedorff (1-0) earned the win with 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings of work.

The Retrievers return to action Saturday when they face Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. in the first game of their annual Spring Break trip down in Florida.
