Women's Basketball Drops Season Finale to Stony Brook, 59-48

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) posted her first double-double of the season, but the UMBC women's basketball team (13-16, 7-9 AE) dropped its season finale to America East rival Stony Brook (9-19, 7-9 AE) Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. The teams finish in a three-way tie for fourth place with Binghamton, but by virtue of tiebreaker rules, the Retrievers will earn the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Boston University in the quarterfinals of the America East Championship on Friday.

Brown recorded 11 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. It was her first double-digit scoring effort since Jan. 13 at Albany. Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored a team-high 14 points and added seven boards en route to America East Player of the Game honors.

Stony Brook forward Kirsten Jeter paced the Seawolves with a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals.

UMBC led for most of the first half, using a 7-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 13:47 remaining in the period. But the Seawolves climbed back to tie the score at 23-23 at the 2:22 mark, and the Retrievers led by one, 25-24, at halftime.

Neither team could find the basket for the first seven minutes of the second stanza, as the two sides combined to make just two of the first 15 shots and commit seven turnovers during that stretch. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Stony Brook guard Gerda Gatling put the Seawolves on top for the first time, 32-27, at the 12:47 mark and sparked a 12-0 run that gave the hosts control of the game.

Stony Brook took a game-high 15-point lead, 51-36, on a three-point play by forward Destiny Jacobs with 5:22 remaining before a pair of free throws by Kurowski and a 3-pointer by Brown cut the Retrievers' deficit to single digits with 3:27 to go. But that was as close as UMBC would get, as Stony Brook guard Misha Horsey responded with a 3-pointer of her own that sealed the victory.
