—Four Retrievers scored in double figures, but the UMBC women's basketball team (4-4) fell at cross-town rival Coppin State (3-5) by a score of 55-54 Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' first game at their new Physical Education Complex.
Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) posted her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guards Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn./Heritage) and Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) also netted 11 apiece and senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) chipped in 10. Junior forward Meghan Colabella (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) added nine points and 11 boards.
UMBC's first seven field goals of the game came from long distance, and the Retrievers did not hit a two-point attempt until Brooks' jumper with 1:05 left in the first half. Brown had three triples and a team-best nine points in the opening stanza, but Coppin State led, 31-29, at halftime.
The Eagles held a 49-43 advantage with 7:07 to play in the game before a 3-pointer by Kurowski sparked a 9-0 UMBC run that gave the Retrievers a 52-49 lead with 5:00 remaining.
But Coppin State guard Shante Cummings scored four straight points to put the hosts back on top with 3:06 left, and the Eagles held on for the 55-54 final score.
Lakeytah Irving led three Eagles in double figures with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Retrievers have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 20, at cross-town rival Loyola.
