-The UMBC women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game Wednesday evening, falling to Stony Brook, 68-53, at the SBU Sports Complex. The Retrievers fall a season-low three games below .500 at 10-13 and drop to 3-7 in America East play, while the Seawolves, who have won eight of their last nine, improve to 12-10 overall and 8-2 in league action.
With Stony Brook ahead 27-24 with 3:15 remaining in the first half, the Seawolves scored nine straight points to open a 12-point lead. Sophomore guard Melissa Book hit a lay-up with 25 seconds remaining to make the score 36-26 at halftime.
Kelly Watson led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, and the Seawolves shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) in the period. Leah Getz had a game-high seven rebounds. Junior forward Amanda Robinson led the Retrievers with seven points, and UMBC shot 45.8 percent from the floor.
The Retrievers came out of halftime on a 9-0 run to pull to within one point at 36-35 after just two-and-a-half minutes. But Stony Brook outscored UMBC, 32-18, the rest of the way for the 68-53 victory.
Down by just five at 48-43 with 11:05 remaining, the Retrievers were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes, during which time the Seawolves scored nine points to open a 14-point lead.
Watson led four Seawolves in double figures with 29 points on 12-for-16 shooting, including 5-for-8 from three-point range. Stony Brook shot 54 percent for the game, including 56.5 percent in the second half. Getz posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Robinson and junior guard Kristin Drabyn each scored 13 points for UMBC, which shot 41.5 percent in the game.
Senior forward Sharri Rohde started in her 107th consecutive game, breaking UMBC's record for career starts. She has not missed a game in her career. Rohde also tallied her 300th career assist, making her just the third Retriever ever with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in her career.
The Retrievers return home Saturday, Feb. 10, to host Albany in a rematch of January's 70-51 Great Dane victory. Game time is 7 p.m.
