Baltimore-UMBC senior forward Sharri Rohde became the 15th player in Retriever history to score 1,000 points in her career, but the UMBC women's basketball team (8-7, 1-1 America East) dropped a 72-60 decision to America East foe Stony Brook (5-9, 1-1 America East) Sunday afternoon at RAC Arena. The loss ended the Retrievers' four-game winning streak.
Four players scored in double figures for UMBC, led by senior point guard Brittnie Hughes' 15. Junior forward Amanda Robinson tallied 14 points, while junior guard Kristin Drabyn had 13 and Rohde scored 10.
Stony Brook's Mykeema Ford led all players with 29 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range and a perfect 9-for-8 from the foul line.
The Seawolves scored the first seven points of the game and jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 5:40 of play, as the Retrievers missed their first seven shots. Stony Brook opened a game-high 18-point lead at 29-11 with 8:17 to play before a 9-2 UMBC run cut it to seven points, 35-28, with just 18 seconds left in the first half.
Ford drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Seawolves into halftime with a 38-28 advantage. She led all scorers with 13 points at the intermission, while Hughes had a team-high 11 for UMBC.
Stony Brook shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field in the first half, including 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from three-point range. The Retrievers shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the floor in the period.
The Seawolves held a 16-point lead, 61-45, with less than four minutes to play in the game, but a 12-5 UMBC run late in the second half cut the deficit to nine points at 57-66 with 43 seconds remaining.
Rohde contributed five points during the run, including the three-pointer that put her over the 1,000-point plateau. Entering the game needing seven points to achieve the milestone, Rohde waited until less than three minutes remained to become the 13th member of UMBC's 1,000-point/500-rebound club.

Three Seawolves recorded double-digit rebounds, led by Leah Getz with 12. Dana Ferraro and Jessica Smith also posted 10 boards apiece as Stony Brook out-rebounded UMBC, 44-28.
Getz added a season-high 17 points for the double-double and also had four steals, while Ford contributed a game-high seven assists.
Robinson posted seven rebounds, three blocks and four assists to go along with her 14 points, while Drabyn grabbed a career-high six boards. Rohde added four steals.
The Retrievers shot 37.3 percent in the game, including just 26.9 percent (7-for-26) from three-point range. Hughes tied a career-high with four of 10 triples. The Seawolves shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from long distance.
The Retrievers return to action Wednesday, Jan. 10, as they travel to Albany for their first America East Conference road game of the season. Game time is 7 p.m.
