UMBC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT HOME TO STONY BROOK, 62-46, ON SENIOR NIGHT

– The UMBC women's basketball team (15-11, 7-8 America East) dropped a 62-46 decision to Stony Brook (18-8, 11-4 AE) in America East women's basketball action on Tuesday night at UMBC RAC Arena. The Retrievers led by one at the half, but a 16-2 run in the second period by the Seawolves put Stony Brook out in front for good.

The Retrievers and Seawolves played a very tight first half with 11 lead changes and four ties in the opening period as neither team stretched a single lead to more than five points.

UMBC led by one at break, 30-29, behind Sharri Rohde, who paced the Retrievers with 12 points. Rohde knocked down five baskets including two three-pointers in the opening stanza. The Seawolves utilized 10 points from Jessica Smith and eight points from Dana Ferraro.

UMBC hit the first basket of the second half as Matea Pender drained a jumper from Mackenzie Butler. Stony Brook retaliated as Mykeema Ford, who was held scoreless in the first half, tallied nine straight points and 12 overall during a 16-2 run by the Seawolves.

UMBC, trailing 45-34, hit five consecutive points to close within six at 45-39. Sidney Orndorff stopped the run for Stony Brook, hitting a three-point basket at the 10:15 mark to push the lead to nine at 48-39. UMBC would only get as close as eight points the remainder of the game, leading to the Seawolves third straight win.

Pender led UMBC with 15 points while Rohde, who was held to just one shot the entire second half, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Rohde added a block, steal and three assists to her line.

Smith and Ferraro finished with double-doubles as Smith tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds while Ferraro scored 12 points with 11 boards. Ford finished with 14 points and six assists. The Seawolves corralled 16 offensive rebounds and out rebounded UMBC 45-26 for the game and 26-7 in the second half.

Prior to the opening tip, UMBC honored senior team manager Catherine Gilbert and seniors Matea Pender and Erin Voss in a pre-game ceremony. The Retrievers return to action Saturday in the regular season finale at Albany at 2 p.m.
