Vestal,N.Y.—Shea Kenny's three-pointer with 3:12 remaining broke a 50-all tie and gave host Binghamton the lead for good as the Bearcats edged UMBC, 61-52, before 2,203 fans on "Senior Day" at the BU Events Center.
The Bearcats (14-11) pulled even with UMBC (15-10) for fourth place in the conference as both teams are now 7-7 in league play.
UMBC sprinted out to leads of 7-0 and 13-5, but Binghamton surged ahead, 29-26 at intermission. UMBC hit 11 of 20 shots (55 percent) from the floor and four of eight from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Trailing 38-32, the Retrievers went on a 13-2 run to reclaim the lead at 45-40 with 8:53 remaining. With the game tied at 50, Shea hit her second trifecta of the half but UMBC countered with a Heather Lutrell field goal to trim the deficit to 53-52 with 2:11 remaining. But that would be UMBC's final points of the day as Binghamton's Rachel Laws converted on a three-point play on the next possession and UMBC missed the front end of a one-and-one chance from the line and their next five shots from the floor to fall for just the second time in the last nine outings.
Junior forward Sharri Rohde continued her torrid pace, hitting nine of 12 shots from the floor and leading all scorers with 20 points. But Rohde fouled out with 2:50 to play and the Retriever offense sputtered down the stretch. Hughes and sophomore post Amanda Robinson scored eight points each for UMBC, while Laws and Kenny added 16 and 15 respectively for the victors.
Binghamton won despite 37.3 percent shooting from the floor. They hit 16 of 18 shots from the line, compared to just two of five by the visitors. UMBC finished the game at 22 of 46 (47.8%) from the floor, but only managed three offensive rebounds.
UMBC will celebrate its "Senior Night"on Tuesday at the RAC Arena, honoring Matea Pender and Erin Voss before the game vs. Stony Brook (7:00 p.m.).
