The UMBC Baseball team will wrap-up it's home mid-week portion of the schedule when it hosts local rival Coppin State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The two teams met in Hanover on March 24 as
Danny Orr picked up three hits and six RBI in the first three innings as the visiting Retrievers won a 24-14 slugfest at Joe Cannon Stadium.
The Retrievers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an Orr three-run triple in the first, and then exploded for six runs in the second. An RBI grounder by
Carver Salazar was misplayed allowing
Jesiah Carpenter, who hit a leadoff triple, to score and make it 4-0. After Salazar got to third on an error, he scored on an
Anthony Mascuilli sacrifice fly to make it 5-0, before
Danny Orr ripped a two-RBI double three batters later. Carpenter finished the scoring for the inning with a two-run single that made it 9-0.
UMBC tacked on three more in the third as Mascuilli was hit by a pitch and would score on an
Ehi Okojie double, his third hit in three innings.
Danny Wyatt and Orr then hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 12-0.
Coppin State scored one in the third and five in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, but the Dawgs responded with four in the fifth. Mascuilli and
Luke Buscaglia each drew a bases loaded walk, another run would score on a balk and Wyatt added an RBI single to push the lead to 16-6.
The Eagles once again responded with five in the bottom of the fifth to make it 16-11, and it remained that way until the seventh when the Retrievers added six insurance runs. Mascuilli had an RBI single,
Nico Ong reached on an RBI error, and
Derek Paris followed with an RBI single of his own. With the bases loaded,
Kyle Eddington was hit by a pitch and
Jacob Bagania walked, before
Brooks Henderson gave UMBC a 22-11 lead with a sacrifice fly.
The hosts again countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth, but the Retrievers once again answered in the ninth when Eddington hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a Bagania walk, stole third and scored on another Henderson sacrifice fly. Bagania then made it 24-14 when he scored on a
Zach Hampton sacrifice fly.
Bennett Speicher picked up his first win at UMBC by tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Chris Harbert worked a perfect ninth, ending the game with a strikeout.
All 15 Retrievers who made a plate appearance reached safely, with 10 picking up at least one hit and five having multi-hit games.
Last time out, After tying the game in the bottom of the seventh inning at 6-6, UMBC used a six-run eighth to defeat UAlbany 12-6 on Sunday afternoon, taking the series victory. The Retrievers improved to 22-20 on the season and 10-8 in the America East.
Anthony Mascuilli had a four-hit day for UMBC, slugging his second homer of the season and driving in five runs to lead the offensive effort.
Brooks Henderson and
Joe Lomangino each drove in a pair of runs in the win.
UMBC jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third, starting the scoring with Mascuilli's three-run shot to center.
Derek Paris made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring
Ehi Okojie. Henderson then laced a two-out double to left, scoring
Danny Orr to make it 5-0.
UAlbany pushed a run across in the fourth before chasing UMBC starter
Sergio Droz in the fifth and taking a 6-5 lead on a Jaxon Mueller RBI single in the inning.
The Retrievers struck back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, getting a monster pinch hit double from
Chris Harbert, setting up Mascuilli to tie the game later in the inning with a single up the middle.
UMBC broke it open against Michael Mariano in the eighth, as Henderson gave UMBC a 7-6 lead with a double to score Orr.
Joe Lomangino, who entered to pinch run for Harbert, singled to left, scoring Henderson and Paris to put UMBC up by three. After Ryan Pittz entered on the mound for UAlbany, Mascuilli drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a
Danny Wyatt sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to score
Dylan Melton.
Brady Fox completed his fifth inning of the game in the ninth to secure the win, his third of the season. Fox allowed four hits and struck out six in 5.0 innings on the bump.
Scouting Coppin State:
Jordan Treadwell's two home runs were not enough as Coppin State dropped its series finale to New Haven, 9-8 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 9-32 overall and 9-18 in the NEC while the Chargers moved to 10-29 on the year and 9-15 in league play.
A junior from Menifee, Calif., Treadwell went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a walk while
Angel Garcia, Nelson Grajales and
Terrell Milliner also had multi-hit games. Grajales and Milliner also scored twice while Milliner also drove in a pair of runs.
Abel Ortiz had the longest outing of the season, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out three in 4.0 innings.
Jake Cumming and
Luke Corcoran were charged with two runs apiece before
Justin Ritz struck out two while allowing no runs in his inning of work.
Mekenna Wakakuwa also threw a scoreless inning.
Treadwell gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first before New Haven tied it up in the top of the third. Coppin responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a two-run double by Milliner to drive in Garcia and Grajales.
Emilio Feliciano came in to score on a sacrifice fly by
Pranav Sundar and Milliner made it a 5-1 score with a run on a wild pitch.
New Haven scored eight unanswered runs over the next five innings before Treadwell homered again in the eighth. Coppin rallied in the ninth for a pair of runs to make it a one-run game as Grajales scored all the way from first as Milliner singled to left and the error got all the way to the wall.
Marcus Sanders followed with an RBI single before a new pitcher got the final out of the game.
