BALTIMORE -- Fresh off an America East series victory over UMass Lowell, the UMBC Baseball team will play a pair of midweek non-conference contests before jumping back into Conference play this weekend at NJIT.
The Retrievers make the short trip to nearby Hanover to face Coppin State before hosting Delaware State on Wednesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m. for both games.Â
On Saturday,Â
Anthony Mascuilli went 4-for-4 with the game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth as the Dawgs rallied from a late six-run deficit to defeat visiting UMass Lowell, 9-8, to clinch the first America East series of the year.Â
The Retrievers rallied again in game two, but a run in the final frame gave the River Hawks a 4-3, seven-inning, win in game two.
UMBC found itself in an early 4-0 hole in game one (originally a seven inning contest) before aÂ
Danny Wyatt RBI single in the third scored Mascuilli to cut the deficit to 4-1. The lead was then 7-1 in the fifth when Mascuilli scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.Â
Jesiah Carpenter and Mascuilli hit back to back RBI doubles in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-5 in the sixth.Â
UML pushed the lead back to 8-5 beforeÂ
Luke Buscaglia, Carpenter and Mascuilli drew three straight bases loaded walks to tie the game and force extras. In the bottom of the ninth, Carpenter singled and then raced home from first to score on Mascuilli's first pitch double down the line in left.Â
Nick Remy retired all five batters he faced to earn the win, including striking out the final four batters in a row.
In game two, the River Hawks went up 3-0 in the first, before Wyatt hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. It remained 3-1 until Leewood Mollessa tied the game in the fifth with a two-run homer, before UML re-took the lead in the seventh.
Coppin State's baseball team was edged, 3-2 in the Seattle HBCU Series finale by Seattle University to complete the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at Fort Steilacoom Park. The Eagles fell to 4-13 on the season while the Redhawks improved to 8-11.
