Baseball Opens 2025 Home Slate Against Cornell

Fresh off its first win of the season, the UMBC Baseball team will begin its home schedule by hosting Cornell for a three game series beginning on Saturday at Alumni Field. The Retrievers and Big Red will play a two nine-inning doubleheader at noon on Saturday before closing the series at noon on Sunday.

Last time out, freshman Danny Orr went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Leewood Molessa doubled in his first at-bat in nearly a year and Emmett Tolis struck out five in 2.2 perfect innings of work to lead the visiting UMBC Baseball team to a 5-4 win over Towson on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened:
  • After Towson scored an unearned run in the first to go up 1-0, Molessa doubled off the wall to leadoff the top of the second
  • Orr then reached on an error and Molessa would score on a one-out RBI double from Derek Paris
  • Luke Buscaglia then drove in Orr with an RBI groundout to give the Dawgs the lead for good.
  • Kyle Eddington and Jesiah Carpenter then worked back-to-back walks before a Nico Ong single plated two to make it a 4-1 game
  • The Tigers would score another unearned run in the third to make it 4-2
  • Tolis entered in the fourth and retired all eight batters he faced before Ayden Gonzalez relieved him and got a ground out to keep it 4-2 after six
  • The hosts finally got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out single followed by a triple to make it 4-3
  • Matt Cunningham was called in from the bullpen and got a pair of strikeouts to keep the Dawgs up one
  • In the top of the eighth, Wyat reached on an error, stole second and scored on an Orr RBI single to make it 5-3
  • A hit-by-pitch, a single and two wild pitches plated a run for Towson in the bottom of the eighth, but Cunningham again got a strikeout to strand the tying run at third
  • Nick Remy came in to close the game out and worked around a two-out double to complete the save
Scouting Cornell:
  • Sophomore infielder Kevin Hager and junior right-handed pitcher Carson Mayfield have both earned weekly awards from the Ivy League, the conference office announced Monday morning.
  • Following his stellar performance on the mound in Cornell baseball's season-opening upset of No. 17-ranked Duke, Mayfield was named the Ancient Eight's Pitcher of the Week after hurling six no-hit innings for the Big Red en route to its 11-8 victory over the Blue Devils at Jack Coombs Field last Friday.
  • Toeing the rubber for the first time for Cornell since April 20, 2024, after missing the final month of last year's campaign due to injury, Mayfield made an impactful return to the mound, facing just one batter over the minimum after issuing two walks and striking out a pair of Duke hitters.
  • Hager was named Player of the Week after finishing the weekend tied for the team lead in batting average (.500), going 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run and two RBI, while concluding the weekend leading the Big Red in runs (4), slugging percentage (1.000), and OPS (1.636).
  • In the season-opening upset win, Hager hit a leadoff home run in the third inning, which put Cornell ahead for good as it never trailed for the remainder of the contest, en route to its first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 6-ranked Georgia Tech in the nightcap of a March 23, 1991 doubleheader.
  • The win over Duke marked Cornell's first win in a season opener since 2017, against Navy, and was its first win over Duke since April 3, 1941, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
  • Cornell has now defeated an ACC opponent in consecutive seasons for the first time since posting five wins over NC State across three years (twice in 1966, twice in 1967, and once in 1968).
