Anthony Swenda smacked a bases-clearing three-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth to rally the UMBC Baseball team past host Delaware State, 9-8, on Wednesday afternoon.
Swenda also homered, while
Dawson Baracani and
Derek Paris each had three hit games. Baracani had a pair of RBI and Paris,
Luke Trythall and
Justin Taylor each added an RBI of their own.
Zach Kelly worked the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first career win, after
Joe Pucek was solid in his third start of the season, allowing just two runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
Nico Ong,
Matt Ryan and
Danny Wyatt also had hits for the Dawgs.
How it Happened:
- Swenda got UMBC on the board with a solo homer in the second
- In the third, Paris singled, stole second and scored on a Baracani double to make it 2-0
- The Retrievers made it 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI double from Trythall and an RBI single from Paris
- The Hornets plated seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead
- UMBC got a run back in the top of the seventh on a Bracani RBI single to score Trythall
- DSU would make it 8-5 in the eighth, however
- Paris, Ong and Baracani all singled with one out to load the bases
- Taylor would beat out an infield single to make it 8-6
- After a flyout put UMBC down to its last out, Swenda cleared the bases with his big double
- The hosts put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth, byt Ryan made an incredible scoop and throw on a grounder to end the game
The Retrievers travel to Binghamton this weekend for a three-game series
