BOSTON -- For the first time in his career,
Dawson Baracani has been named the America East Player of the Week, the Conference announced on Monday morning.
Baracani hit .583 while slugging .917 with a .688 on base percentage, seven RBI and six runs in a sweep of Maine.
The Retrievers play a pair of road mid-weeks this week, heading to Georgetown on Tuesday and Delaware State on Wednesday.
Last time out, Pitchers
Eddie Sargent and
Sam Downs combined to strike out 12 batters while allowing just two total runs as the UMBC Baseball team completed the three-game sweep of defending America East Champion Maine with a 4-2 win on Friday night.
Each pitcher allowed just a run while striking out six, with Sargent getting the start and working 4.1 innings. Downs worked the final 4.2 innings of relief to pick up the win.
Scouting Georgetown:
- The Hoyas dropped Friday afternoon's contest to Penn State 7-2 at the United States Naval Academy. With the loss, the Hoyas slide to 29-16, 10-4 BIG EAST.
- In the first frame, GU was able to load the bases with two outs. The Hoya offense was unable to bring any of the runners home leaving three stranded heading into the second frame.
- Penn State was able to plate one in the top of the second jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. GU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but once again was unable to bring any of the runners home.
- The third frame was scoreless for both sides. In the top of the fourth, PSU added one on an RBI triple extending the Nittany Lions' advantage to two. In the bottom of the fourth, GU was able to put runners on first and second with two outs. Ficca stepped up to the dish and hit an RBI double to left center plating two runs for GU. After four complete frames, the score was tied at 2-2 heading into the fifth.
- After a scoreless fifth, PSU hit back-to-back RBI doubles taking back the lead at 4-2 in the sixth frame.
- Penn State plated two more in the seventh giving the Nittany Lions a 6-2 advantage.
- The eighth frame was scoreless for both sides. Penn State added another in the top of the ninth and the Hoyas were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the frame dropping the contest 7-2.
- Catlett tossed five innings allowing four hits and two runs while fanning seven Penn State batters.
- GU earned six walks on the day.
- Georgetown tallied 11 strikeouts.
Scouting Delaware State:
- Senior Krew Bouldin put together a brilliant outing at the plate Saturday, hitting two home runs to help power the Delaware State Hornets over the Stonehill Skyhawks 17-12.
- Sophomore Kieran Etwaru started on the mound and picked up the win for Delaware State (16-23, ). The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing four walks and striking out six.
- Krew Bouldin went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs.
- Senior Kodai Yaoita added to Bouldin's awesome power-hitting performance by going 2-for-5 with three RBI along with one walk. Freshman Jaryn Sample also helped out for the Hornets, going 3-for-6 with a walk and two RBI.
- Trailing 1-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the second inning. Delaware State's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Yaoita.
- The Hornets then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Skyhawks cut it to 6-3. Delaware State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Joey Current, which brought the Hornets lead to 7-3.
- Stonehill narrowed Delaware State's lead to 7-6 before the Hornets stretched the advantage to 12-6 in the fifth inning. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Bouldin.
- The Skyhawks gained ground, closing the gap to 12-8 until Delaware State added some insurance in the eighth. The Hornets scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run groundout off the bat of Yaoita, bringing the Delaware State advantage to 17-8. Stonehill put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 17-12 win.
