Last time out, Logan Wiley pitched 5.1 no-hit innings, but the UMBC Baseball team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to host Navy on Tuesday afternoon.
Wiley struck out three, and the Retrievers out-hit the hosts, 9-4, but all four Navy hits came in a four run seventh that gave them the lead for good.
The game was scoreless until the Retrievers took a 2-0 lead in the seventh when Justin Taylor had a two-out two-RBI double. Navy, however, would quickly answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
UMBC responded with two outs in the eighth when Matt Ryan doubled,
Jayden Shertel walked and
Kyle Eddington and
Jesiah Carpenter were both hit-by-pitches to force in a run and make it 4-3, but the Retrievers would strand the bases loaded.
Sam Daniels came in and worked a perfect eighth to keep it a one run game going into the ninth.
In the ninth, Anthony Swenda singled with two outs, but was stranded.
Swenda and Derek Paris each had a multi-hit game for UMBC, while Carpenter,
Gabriel Ruiz, and
Luke Trythall also had hits.
Paris leads the team on offense with a .308 batting average and has drawn 10 walks to only two strikeouts.
Trythall has a team-best four RBI, while Swenda and Matthew Best have each homered for the Retrievers.
The starting rotation has been solid for UMBC in the early going as Downs has been named the America East Pitcher of the Week both weeks of play this season as he has yet to allow an earned run in 11.2 innings pitched.Â
Johnson, the defending America East Pitcher of the Year has struck out 15 batters in 11.1 innings, while Shertel has a solid 3.00 ERA. Nick Remy leads the relief corps with a 3.00 ERA in four appearances, and has picked up a save
