Baseball Heads to Navy for Tuesday Afternoon Game

Fresh off its first win of the season, the UMBC Baseball Team looks to build momentum as it heads to Annapolis to face Navy on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Lat time out, Samuel Downs had another stellar outing on the mound, while Matthew Best blasted his first homer of the season as UMBC split a doubleheader against visiting Monmouth on Sunday.

The Hawks took the first game, 7-2, before the Retrievers took the night-cap, 2-1.

In game two, Downs went 6.2 innings, allowing just an unearned run while striking out four and walking only one. Nick Remy worked a scoreless ninth for the save

Derek Paris leads the team with a .286 average and 10 walks to one strikeout.

Scouting Navy
  • On a Sunday afternoon that saw the Navy baseball team (4-7) fight back to tie the score three different times, the Midshipmen could not do it a fourth time as they dropped the series finale, 8-7, to Iona (2-7) in the 10th inning at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
  • Despite getting support with a two-run home run from senior Logan Keller and a career-high three hits for junior Jack Finnigan, the Navy pitching could not hold the Gaels in check, as Jayson Gonzalez's three hits and a three-RBI contest by James Kemp propelled Iona to the series win.

UMBC will travel to Texas to take on Lamar this weekend.
