Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. – The visiting UMBC baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon at Et Straw Family Stadium. The Retrievers scored three runs in the ninth to take the opener, 10-7, and cruised in the nightcap by a count of 13-2.
UMBC improved to 6-5 while the Mountaineers dropped to 7-8.
Game I (9 innings)
Senior catcher
Tony Krueger smoked a three-run double down the right field line in the top of the ninth inning to break a 10-10 tie and the Retrievers held on for a 13-10 win in the opener.
Graduate student right fielder
Ian Diaz went 3-for-4 with a homer, triple, and three runs scored while junior first baseman
Luke Trythall also added three hits. Krueger was 2-for-5 and collected a pair of doubles.
UMBC sophomore lefty
Jayden Shertel (7.0 innings, four earned runs, six strikeouts) got a no-decision despite a solid outing.
How It Happened
- The Mount opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first on two hits and an error against Shertel.
- The Retrievers answered back and tied the game in the top of the second as junior second baseman
Anthony Swenda doubled in Krueger (doubled) and then came around to score on an RBI sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop
Dawson Baracani.
- The hosts took the lead again, 3-2, on an RBI sacrifice fly by shortstop Tyler Long.
- UMBC got even in the top of the fifth as Diaz ripped a one-out triple to right center and came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior center fielder
Justin Taylor.
- Sophomore third baseman
Matt Ryan provided the visitors with their first lead of the day as he belted a lead-off homer in the top of the sixth.
- The Retrievers added three more in the top of the seventh to grab a 7-3 lead. Diaz smacked a one-out homer, freshman designated hitter
Leewood Molessa doubled in Taylor (singled) and then scored on a wild pitch.
- Mount closed to within 7-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Jayson Kramer lifted a two-run homer to score center fielder Brady Drawbaugh (tripled).
- The hosts evened the contest with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth off sophomore reliever
Chris Ho (1-0). Designated hitter Scott Seeker had the big hit as he greeted Ho with a one-out homer after second baseman Tristan McAlister had singled.
- The Retrievers regrouped and plated three runs in the top of the ninth to move ahead for good. Diaz opened the frame with an infield single and Molessa came through with a 1-out single. Ryan then drew a walk to load the bases for Krueger, who cleared the bases with a game-winning double.

Ben Craig came on to earn his second save in the ninth despite loading the bases.
Game 2 (7 innings)
Sophomore right-hander
Nick Remy picked up his second win of the season as he allowed just two earned runs over 5.1 innings of work.
Freshman catcher
Derek Paris went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the offense. Diaz (batting .462) and Molessa (2 RBI) each added a pair of hits and Baracani had a couple of RBI sacrifice flies.
How It Happened
- The Retrievers scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and never looked back. Swenda delivered the first run on an RBI sacrifice fly to plate Molessa (hit by pitch). Baracani then added another RBI sacrifice fly to score Trythall (singled).
- UMBC created some breathing room in the top of the third, 7-0, as they pushed across five runs on four hits and an error. Molessa doubled to score Diaz (singled), Taylor produced an RBI sacrifice fly, Paris smashed a two-run double to left-center and then scored on an error.
- The hosts scored two runs on three hits to close within 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Seeker recorded his second homer of the day to account for the scoring.
- The Retrievers blew the game open with four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to grab an 11-2 advantage. Paris, Diaz, Ryan, and Molessa all produced RBI singles.
- UMBC added two more in the top of the sixth to extend to 13-2 on RBI sacrifice flies by Baracani and left fielder
