The Retrievers Have Won Seven Straight Home Openers

  • UMBC opened the season with a heartbreaking loss at Louisville on Monday night. The Retrievers led by as many as 13 points late in the opening half but eventually fell 94-93 in the closing seconds. Sophomore guard Dion Brown (career best 28 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) and JR guard Bryce Johnson (21 points, 3-for-6, 3-pt range) delivered sensational performances. Graduate student forward Khydarius Smith added 13 points and five boards off the bench. 
  • Brown's 28 points were the most scored by a Retriever on opening night since Nov. 9, 2012 (Ryan Cook, 28 pts at UPenn).
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 136-88 (.614) over the past seven seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
  • The Retrievers were picked sixth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • UMBC has won seven straight home openers.
  • Today begins a four-game home stretch before the Retrievers make the trip down to Maryland on Nov. 21.
  • The Retrievers have 11 new faces on the roster this season, which includes five freshmen.
  • Brown is UMBC's leading returning scorer at 7.7 points per game.
  • Graduate student forward Max Lorca-Lloyd led UPenn with 34 blocks last season and recorded three swats at Louisville.
  • Junior guard Bryce Johnson hit 57 treys last season at Chicago State in 22'-23'.
  • Smith averaged 7.8 ppg. at USC Upstate last season.
  • UMBC is 36-47 all-time against teams that are currently members of the MAAC. 
 
A GLANCE AT THE RED FOXES
  • Marist earned a 71-55 victory at Army on Monday night. The Red Foxes had four players in double-figures scorers: Isaiah Brickman (13), Max Allen II (13), Jadin Collins (12), Jackson Price (10). Brickner also added five rebounds and five assists.
  • Brickner was named Preseason All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
  • Brickner is coming off a freshman season in which he was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team and All-Championship Team. He led the Red Foxes in assists, steals, and free throw percentage while averaging 7.4 points per game. Against Quinnipiac in the MAAC quarterfinals, Brickner scored a career-high 21 points as he drained a career-high five three-pointers in six tries. He had consecutive made free throw streaks of 28 and 14 during the season.
  • As a team, Marist was picked to finish eighth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The Red Foxes went 13-20 overall.

A PROGRAM ON THE RiSE
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 136-88 (.614) over the past seven seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program-high.
  • UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
COACH FERRY
  • Jim Ferry is in his 23rd season as a collegiate head coach and his third at UMBC.
  • Ferry has led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22. The Retrievers finished fourth in the league a season ago.

UP NEXT
  • The Retrievers will host Penn State York at The Peake on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
  • Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah scored a career high 19 points, leading four Retrievers in double figures as UMBC defeated Penn State-York, 92-65, in the home opener of the 2022-23 season.
  • The Retrievers scored 52 second half points, hitting 22 of their first 33 shots from the floor in the period.  Senior guard Jacob Boonyasith scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while graduate students Jarvis Doles and Colton Lawrence added 13 apiece.
