Box Score Orono, Maine – For the second consecutive game, a UMBC freshman hurler was brilliant, but on this occasion, it came in defeat, as the Retrievers' season ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at NJIT in the America East Baseball Championships.
Freshman
Nick Remy did not allow a Highlander hit, pitching 7.1 innings in his longest career outing. He left the game with a 1-0 lead and runners on first and second via a walk and an error, but both came around to score on infield hits.
The Retrievers outhit the Highlanders, 10-2, but dropped to 4-14 in one-run games in 2022. All three UMBC decisions in the tournament were decided by a single run.
Remy struck out six, walked three and hit a pair of batters. The second run he allowed was unearned.
For the third consecutive game in the tournament, UMBC took an early 1-0 lead. In the third inning,
Christian Easley,
Justin Taylor and Luke Trythrall all came through with one-out singles to put the Retrievers ahead.
UMBC had a golden opportunity to stretch the lead as they loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by
Logan Doran and
Drew Roberts and an intentional walk to
Matt Ryan. Doran was unable to score on Roberts' bloop double as the ball was retrieved quickly in shallow right field. But
Connor Kelly lined out to shortstop and
Luke Johnson grounded out to second base to end the threat and set up the NJIT rally in the bottom of the inning.
Trythall and Taylor had two hits apiece for UMBC. The Retrievers finished the campaign at 23-32, reaching their most wins since the championship season of 2017.
