Baseball Drops Heartbreaking 7-6 Decision in #AEBASE Opener to UML

Trythall homers in 13-hit UMBC attack

Orono, Maine – UMBC Baseball's tough luck in one-run games reared its ugly head in the opening game of the 2022 America East Baseball Championships at Mahaney Diamond.

Fourth-seeded UMass Lowell scored the walk-off win with a one-out run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth inning as they defeated the Retrievers, 7-6.

UMBC will attempt to stay alive in the final game of day one, as they will face the loser of the game between No. 3 NJIT and No. 6 Hartford.

The lead exchanged hands on four occasions in the topsy-turvy affair where UMBC outhit UML, 13-11.

UMBC sophomore first baseman Luke Trythall paced the attack with three hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Retrievers a 4-2 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMBC loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and freshman Matt Ryan came within a few feet of hitting a grand slam, but had to settle for a sacrifice fly, scoring Logan Doran.
  • UML responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off America East First Team hurler Luke Johnson.
  • The Retrievers tied the game in the fourth inning. With two outs, Christian Easley tripled to right field and Jayden Shertel slapped a run-scoring single to left field to plate Easley.
  • Trythall's second home run of the year scored Justin Taylor, who had singled ahead of the UMBC clean-up hitter.
  • UML responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth and took a 6-4 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh.
  • Shortstop Drew Roberts did the damage for UMBC in the eighth inning, tripling home Shertel from  second base with a two-out shot down the left field line. He came home on a subsequent wild pitch to knot the game at 6-6.
  • Trythrall singled with one out in the ninth, and, one out later, Easley drove a ball to deep right field, but the River Hawk right fielder made an outstanding running catch just shy of the wall.
Taylor, Roberts and Connor Kelly each collected two hits for UMBC. Reliever Shane Gorman pitched three solid innings for UMBC, entering the game in the sixth, before his lone walk allowed leading off the UML ninth ended up scoring as the game-winning run.

UMBC fell to 3-13 in one run games in 2022 and all three losses to UMass Lowell have been of the one-run variety.
