UMBC's magic number is one, as they hope to sew up a berth in the America East Tournament as Binghamton visits Alumni Field this weekend. One Retriever win or one Hartford loss to Maine would send the Retrievers to Orono for the league championships, beginning on May 25.
A Glance at the Retrievers
- UMBC currently holds a record of 21-28 overall, going 10-17 in the America East Conference. The Retrievers took the final two games of the three-game set versus NJIT, capturing the finale, 9-8, for their first walk-off win of the season. UMBC has played 15 one-run games this season and are 3-12 in those contests.
- The America East Conference named UMBC senior outfielder Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) as its Player of the Week for games ending May 14. Diaz hit .643 (9-for-14) and recorded an OPS of 1.762 as the Retrievers posted a 3-1 week. He moved into a leadoff role against NJIT last weekend and delivered eight hits in 12 at-bats, scored six times and drove in five runs. Diaz raised his average to .296, its highest mark since the first weekend of play in 2022. He is now tied for tenth in America East with 41 runs scored.
- Sophomore pitcher Luke Johnson (3-2, 3.69 ERA, 67K's/68.1 IP,.241 opponent BA) is second in America East in earned run average. Freshman Jayden Shertel is ninth in the conference in ERA with a 4.77 mark.
A Look At The Bearcats and the All-Time Series
- Binghamton enters the weekend series with a mark of 17-27 and a 13-14 America East record. They have dropped two of three in their last three series and are 2-6 in their last eight games.
- On Monday, freshman catcher Evin Sullivan earned America East Rookie of the Week honors. He batted .444 in the series versus Stony Brook. Shortstop Jake Evans is fourth in America East with a .349 batting mark. First baseman Connor Aoki leads the club with eight home runs and 14 doubles, both top ten marks in the conference.
- The Bearcats took two of three from UMBC on April 29-May 1. The Retrievers took the finale, 12-5 as Luke Trythrall, Tony Krueger and Justin Taylor combined for 11 hits and 6 RBI's.
Binghamton leads the all-time series, 55-25, but the teams have split the last ten match-ups.
