Retriever Baseball Opens Seven-Game Road Swing at Binghamton This Weekend

The two squads split eight games in 2021

The UMBC baseball team opens a seven-game road swing with a three-game set at Binghamton on April 30 and May 1 and 2. The action gets underway with a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday evening, followed by games on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) afternoons at the Bearcats' Baseball Complex. The games will be broadcast on the America East digital network.
 
A Glance at the Retrievers
 
  • UMBC currently holds a record of 17-22 overall, going 7-11 in the America East Conference. They are coming off a mid-week 12-3 win over Towson, after dropping two of three versus Stony Brook last weekend. Both losses were of the one-run variety.
  • UMBC is averaging 7.13 runs per game, second-best in America East. The Retrievers have hit a league-high 15 triples.
  • Graduate student Myles Nicholson is having a stellar season thus far. He not only leads the team in many categories, but also leads the America East Conference in a variety of departments. Nicholson is ranked 1st in batting average (.422), on-base percentage (50.8), runs scored (47), hits (66), and triples (4).
  • Junior Justin Taylor had his six-game hitting streak snapped versus Towson, but was 9-for-17 at the plate with two home runs and seven driven home in the four prior games.
 
A Glance at the Bearcats
 
  • Binghamton has turned around their season, winning nine of the last 13 contests and improving to 13-21 overall and 9-9 in America East play.
  • The Bearcats are coming off a road sweep of NJIT last weekend, where they held the Highlanders to nine runs in three games.
  • Binghamton pitchers have excelled in the run and the squad has lowered its ERA to 6.03, second best in America East.
  • Junior Cavan Tully is the Bearcats' top hitter, coming into the weekend with a .314 mark with 12 extra-base hits.
 
Inside the Series
  • The Bearcats lead the all-time series, 53-24.
  • The two teams split eight games last season, also splitting games in Baltimore (April 23-24) and Vestal (May 8-9).
  • UMBC won the final two games in Vestal by scores of 1-0 and 8-3. Luke Johnson threw a seven-inning gem in the 1-0 victory, fanning seven Bearcats.
