Retriever Baseball Welcomes Stony Brook for Weekend Series

The two squads will meet again on Long Island in early May

The UMBC baseball team will host Stony Brook for a three-game set this weekend at Alumni Field. The action gets underway with a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday evening, followed by games on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) afternoons. The games will be broadcast on the America East digital network.
 
A Glance at the Retrievers
 
  • UMBC currently holds a record of 15-20 overall, going 6-9 in the America East Conference.
  • The Retrievers last played against NJIT in Newark, NJ this past weekend. UMBC lost the first two games of the series by scores of 8-2 and 11-3, but managed to win the last game, 11-6.
  • In the most recent win against NJIT, the score was tied at 2-2 entering the late stages of the game. This was until junior Justin Taylor produced an RBI single, followed by a grand slam by junior Michael Cilio in the top half of the 7th inning. This put the Retrievers up, 7-2. They were then able to score one run in the 8th inning and three runs in the 9th inning to help secure the 11-6 win.
  • UMBC is ranked highly in numerous team categories within the America East. The Retrievers are ranked 2nd in runs (246), hits (333), and RBIs (212). The team is also ranked 3rd in batting average with a mark of .281.
  • Graduate student Myles Nicholson is having a stellar season thus far. He not only leads the team in many categories, but also leads the America East Conference in a variety of departments. Nicholson is ranked 1st in batting average (.439), on-base percentage (.521), runs scored (40), hits (61), and triples (4). He also is the only player in the America East Conference with a batting average over .400 and is currently on a 7-game hitting streak.
  • Senior Ian Diaz has had an impressive season, as he leads UMBC and the America East Conference in walks with 31, and is tied for the lead at UMBC and the America East with four sacrifice flies. In addition, Diaz is ranked second on the team in runs scored (29), third in RBIs (20), and fourth on the team in hits (33).
 
A Glance at the Seawolves
 
  • Stony Brook enters the weekend at 15-18, but are 10-5 in America East Conference play.
  • The Seawolves are coming off a weekend series against Binghamton where they managed to win the first game, but dropped the following two contests.
  • Junior Shane Paradine has been outstanding for Stony Brook this season. He leads the team in multiple categories, including batting average (.329), runs scored (30), hits (46), doubles (12), and total bases (69). 
  • Sophomore Matt Brown-Eiring has had an excellent season so far. He ranks second on the Stony Brook team in the categories of batting average (.298), slugging percentage (.540), hits (37), doubles (11), triples (2), and total bases (67). He also leads the team in RBIs with 28 and is tied for a team leading home runs with five.
 
Inside the Series
  • The weekend series at Alumni Field will mark the first meetings between the Retrievers and Seawolves. They will face off again down the road in Stony Brook for another weekend series, spanning from May 6-8.
  • The last time these teams faced off was in May of 2021, with Stony Brook winning the three game series, taking two of three contests.
  • Stony Brook leads the all-time series against UMBC, with a record of 64-17.
